When David Letterman asked Miley Cyrus whether she was estranged from her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, she agreed with his suggestion that “it’s just kinda the way things are played.” Her answer was not a detailed account of a family dispute or a declaration that every tension had ended. She also spoke warmly about both parents, crediting them with supporting her ambitions and describing her father’s influence on her life and work.
What Miley Cyrus said when Letterman asked about estrangement
Cyrus discussed her father during an appearance on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. In the exchange reported by Rolling Stone Canada, Letterman asked: “There’s not estrangement here with your father, it’s just kinda the way things are played?” Cyrus replied, “Yeah.”
That brief answer is the clearest response she gave to the question. It supports saying she agreed with Letterman’s characterization in that moment; it does not establish that she and her father had never experienced difficulties or that all family tensions were resolved.
How Cyrus described her parents
After the question, Cyrus reflected on what her parents had done for their children. “My parents served us and sacrificed so much for us. Anything we dreamed of, they made possible,” she said, in remarks quoted by both Rolling Stone Canada and Teen Vogue.

Her father’s influence
Cyrus credited Billy Ray with shaping her perspective and creative life. She described him as a “map” for what to do and what not to do, saying he had “guided me on both.” The image conveys an influence that included learning from his example as well as from what she might choose to do differently.
Her mother’s place in her life
She also spoke affectionately about her mother, Tish Cyrus, saying, “My mom is my hero.” These comments were part of the same conversation about her parents’ role in making her ambitions possible.

Why the question was attracting attention
By the time the interview was reported on June 13, 2024, there had been public speculation about the family. Teen Vogue noted that Cyrus had skipped Billy Ray’s October 2023 wedding and had not mentioned him in her 2024 Grammy acceptance speech. Those public events were reported context for the speculation; they do not, by themselves, establish the reasons for her choices or prove what the private relationship was like.
The Letterman exchange is therefore best read narrowly: Cyrus accepted his description of the situation, then spoke about her parents with gratitude and affection. She did not provide a full account of the family’s history in the quoted remarks.

What changed after the 2024 interview
A later development should be kept distinct from what Cyrus said to Letterman. The CBS Sunday Morning episode description for October 5, 2025, said Cyrus had reconnected with her estranged father through music: CBS, “Miley Cyrus on achieving ‘Something Beautiful’”. That update dates a reconnection reported in 2025; it does not alter the wording or meaning of her 2024 answer, and the episode description does not detail the timing or private circumstances of the reconnection.
