Michael Moore explicitly condemned murder in a December 13, 2024 response to questions about Luigi Mangione and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He argued that condemning the killing does not require dismissing public anger at the health insurance industry, and called for sweeping change to the system he criticized.

What did Michael Moore say?

Moore published “A Manifesto Against For-Profit Health Insurance Companies” on December 13, 2024, three days after Mangione’s arrest and the public reporting about a handwritten document. Moore said he was responding to repeated media questions about whether he condemned murder. His answer was yes, followed by a broader argument about the health care system.

“Yes, I condemn murder, and that’s why I condemn America’s broken, vile, rapacious, bloodthirsty, unethical, immoral health care industry and I condemn every one of the CEOs who are in charge of it and I condemn every politician who takes their money and keeps this system going instead of tearing it up, ripping it apart, and throwing it all away.”

Those are Moore’s political judgments, not independently established findings about every insurer or executive. His central distinction was that anger at the industry should not be treated as support for Thompson’s killing. He wrote, “Because this anger is not about the killing of a CEO. If everyone who was angry was ready to kill the CEOs, the CEOs would already be dead. That is not what this reaction is about.”

How did Moore frame public anger?

Moore described the anger as “1000% justified” and said, “I want to pour gasoline on that anger.” In context, he connected the metaphor to what he characterized as harms associated with the health care system, including denied claims and care, medical debt, deductibles and premiums. He also explicitly condemned murder in the same post; the metaphor should not be presented as an endorsement of violence.

Moore invoked Sicko, his 2007 documentary about the U.S. health insurance system, and offered the film free in the post. For readers interested in his earlier treatment of the subject, the documentary provides context for his longstanding criticism, rather than a direct account of the 2024 case.

Moore also asserted that 1.4 million people are employed “with the job of DENYING HEALTH CARE,” compared with 1 million doctors. That is Moore’s 2024 figure; the underlying definitions, dataset and counts are not established by the sources cited here, so it should not be read as a verified labor statistic.

What was reportedly in the handwritten document?

Contemporaneous coverage described a handwritten document attributed to Mangione that referred to Moore and journalist Elisabeth Rosenthal as people who had illuminated corruption and greed. STAT reported that the document did not focus specifically on the insurance company, mentioned UnitedHealth Group once and criticized the broader system’s expense. STAT also said it had requested the document from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office but had not received a copy. These details are therefore reported descriptions, not a direct examination of the document.

Rosenthal told STAT, “I don’t condone murder for any reason. This is a terrible, tragic murder, and it shouldn’t have happened.” She also described patients as “deeply frustrated and angry with a health system that doesn’t serve their needs.” Her book An American Sickness examines business practices across health care, including insurance, hospitals, physicians, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, testing, billing and research.

Was the viral Substack post Mangione’s manifesto?

No. The viral Substack post titled “The Allopathic Complex and Its Consequences” is distinct from the handwritten document described by police and news outlets. A PolitiFact fact check published by Al Jazeera reported that Substack removed the post for impersonation and rated false the claim that Mangione wrote it. Do not treat that post as the handwritten document referenced in contemporaneous reporting.

What had prosecutors alleged by December 19, 2024?

In a December 19, 2024 charging announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice said federal prosecutors alleged Mangione planned and stalked Thompson before the December 4 shooting and announced federal charges. Those are allegations described by prosecutors in a charging announcement, not a verdict or finding of guilt.

How to read the competing claims

  • Moore’s position: His December 13 post is a primary source for his stated condemnation of murder and his criticism of the health care industry.
  • The handwritten document: Its reported references to Moore and Rosenthal come from contemporaneous coverage; STAT said it had not obtained a copy.
  • The viral Substack post: The cited fact check says it was an impersonation, not a post written by Mangione.
  • The criminal case: The DOJ announcement describes prosecutors’ allegations, not a judicial conclusion.
