Melania Trump wore two distinct outfits on January 20, 2017: a powder-blue Ralph Lauren coat-and-dress ensemble for the daytime swearing-in and a custom vanilla silk-crepe gown for the inaugural balls, designed with Hervé Pierre. She later presented the gown to the Smithsonian’s First Ladies Collection.
What did Melania Trump wear to the daytime swearing-in?
For the inauguration ceremony, Trump wore a powder-blue Ralph Lauren coat and dress with matching pumps and gloves, according to TIME’s January 20, 2017 report. The soft blue look drew comparisons in contemporary coverage to Jacqueline Kennedy’s style; that is a fashion comparison, not evidence that the outfit copied a specific Kennedy look.
Trump’s spokeswoman described the choice as an American designer for the historic swearing-in. The daytime outfit was separate from the gown she wore later that evening.
Who designed her 2017 inaugural ball gown?
Hervé Pierre designed the evening gown in collaboration with Trump. The Smithsonian’s October 20, 2017 announcement describes it as vanilla silk crepe, with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a slit skirt, and ruffled accent trim running from neckline to hem. A claret ribbon encircled the waist.

The Smithsonian identifies Pierre as a French American fashion and costume designer. Its National Museum of American History collection record credits the design to Pierre in collaboration with Melania Trump.

The Smithsonian announcement and collection record establish its donation and status as a National Museum of American History object; they do not establish whether it is currently on public display.

Keeping the year straight
The blue Ralph Lauren look belongs to the 2017 inauguration, not a later ceremony. In its coverage of the 2025 inauguration, the Associated Press referred back to the 2017 sky-blue Ralph Lauren dress and gloves while describing a different outfit for 2025: Associated Press, January 20, 2025.
