The long-developed follow-up is planned as two films, with Part One scheduled for May 6, 2027, and Part Two for May 25, 2028, according to Variety.
Has filming for The Resurrection of the Christ wrapped?
Yes. Variety reported that production wrapped after filming in Italy, while Rolling Stone Canada reported the shoot lasted 135 days. Variety’s account gives a duration of 134 days, so the reports differ by one day.
Variety named Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi and Matera among the Italian filming locations. The wrap marks a clear shift from the project’s long development period into post-production.
Is Mel Gibson editing the sequel now?
Gibson said at Fan Expo Canada on August 29, 2026, “I’m editing and doing all the post-production work here in Toronto,” according to Rolling Stone Canada. His comment describes the work underway at that point; it does not provide a completion date for post-production.

What is the title of Passion of the Christ 2?
Passion of the Christ 2 is a common shorthand, not the reported title. The project is called The Resurrection of the Christ and is being made as Part One and Part Two, as reported by Variety.
Gibson described the story’s source material in a September 2026 interview with CBN: the four Gospels, Acts, letters from Paul and Peter, and other Christian writings. He said he intended to draw on Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions while filling narrative gaps. Those are the filmmaker’s stated approach, not a claim of scholarly consensus. He also described the adaptation challenge this way: “The event itself is almost impossible to comprehend. And so how do we make that communicable not only for ourselves but for other people?”

What has been said about the films’ format?
The Christian Post reported Gibson said the two films were shot together in Rome, are in English and use a non-linear narrative. That differs from the original film’s use of Aramaic and Latin, according to the same account. These details describe Gibson’s account of the production and storytelling, rather than a scene-by-scene plot synopsis.

The National Catholic Register reported that a remastered theatrical re-release of The Passion of the Christ ran September 10–17, 2026. That window has passed. It was a theatrical event and does not by itself confirm a current 4K Blu-ray edition or its availability.
