Meghan Markle’s remark about “investing in myself” referred to a new business chapter, not a specific financial product or investment recommendation. In a New York Times interview reported on Aug. 28, 2024, she connected her investments in women-run companies with preparing to invest in her own planned lifestyle brand.

What did Meghan Markle mean by “investing in myself”?

Markle was describing a progression: she had backed women-run companies, and that experience helped prepare her to build a business of her own. Harper’s Bazaar reproduced her line from the New York Times interview: “Investing in them has helped me line up for this chapter where I’m investing in myself.” Harper’s Bazaar’s account of the interview places the comment in a discussion of her investments and her planned lifestyle brand.

She also described how public attention to her clothing could be directed toward designers and smaller brands. She said she spent time searching for brands online and looking for designers in different territories. As one example, she recalled discovering Cesta Collective while shopping online and wearing an earring as a way to support a brand. These remarks frame her approach as a mix of personal discovery and visibility for businesses she believed in—not as a formal investment strategy offered to the public.

Which companies were named?

Clevr Blends

Fortune identified Clevr Blends, a specialty latte company, as Markle’s first investment. Fortune’s report also reproduced her description of the factors she considers: “The quality of a brand’s products, the supply chain, ethical standards and practices—these are all things that I consider before making an investment.”

Cesta Collective

Harper’s Bazaar reported Cesta Collective as a recent addition to Markle’s investments at the time of the interview; Fortune called it her latest investment. The company makes basket bags handwoven in Rwanda and finished in Italy, according to Harper’s Bazaar. Markle said she found the brand while browsing online.

How many brands were in the portfolio?

Fortune reported Markle’s estimate that her portfolio included five to 10 brands in 2024. That is an estimate from the interview period, not an independently verified or current count.

What was the “dolphin tank” reference?

Harper’s Bazaar reported Markle describing the investment environment as “friendly waters,” in contrast to the competitive “Shark Tank” metaphor. The phrase is a characterization of the atmosphere she described, not the name of a formal fund or investment program.

How did this connect to her lifestyle brand?

In 2024, Markle was preparing a lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. Contemporary reporting said the brand had previewed strawberry jam and had trademark filings covering categories such as cutlery, cookbooks and jarred foods. Those details describe the 2024 launch context; the reporting cited here does not establish whether the brand or those products are currently available.

The clearest meaning of “investing in myself,” then, is that Markle saw backing other businesses as part of the experience and direction leading into her own venture. Her remarks do not establish the current size of her portfolio, the terms of any investment, or the present status of her brand.
