Matt Damon did not say that Team America: World Police made him look good. In a 2016 interview, he said the puppet portrayal bewildered him: seeing himself able to say little beyond his own name made him wonder whether that was how people perceived him. His comment is reflective, not an endorsement of the joke.
What Matt Damon said about the parody
Damon described his reaction this way: “I was always kind of bewildered by Team America, I think because it’s hard for us to understand what our images are in public, I think we’re not good judges of that, and when I saw myself on screen just only able to say my own name and not really that well, I kind of wondered ‘Wow, is that how people perceive me?’” TIME reported the remarks in 2016.

The key point is the uncertainty in his response. Damon wondered what the gag suggested about his public image; he did not say he thought the film made him look good, nor does the interview establish that he enjoyed the parody.
Why the Matt Damon puppet stood out
The 2004 film by Trey Parker and Matt Stone gives the Damon puppet an unusually minimal bit: it repeatedly says the actor’s name. Damon later said that watching this version of himself prompted his question about how the public saw him. The joke’s sparseness is central to why he found it bewildering.

That reaction is different from explaining the creators’ intent. The reporting supports describing the puppet’s one-word performance and Damon’s response, but it does not establish a specific motive behind the character.
The gag belongs to a larger political satire
Team America: World Police uses puppets to parody action-movie conventions and politics. Contemporary coverage framed it as political satire, not simply a collection of celebrity impersonations. Matt Damon’s brief appearance is one celebrity joke within that wider approach; it is not a complete account of the film.
CBS News covered the film in October 2004, while ABC News reported on the creators and the publicity surrounding it. A contemporaneous Fresh Air interview with Matt Stone also situated the project in its political context.

- Established: Damon said the portrayal bewildered him and made him question whether the public saw him that way.
