What Mary Trump Revealed About the $400 Million Donald Trump Received From His Father

The “$400 million” figure refers to a 2018 New York Times investigation’s estimate that Donald Trump received at least $413 million in today’s dollars from his father Fred Trump’s real estate empire. His niece Mary Trump later said she gave the Times records she had obtained through litigation over her grandfather’s estate. The figure is the newspaper’s reported estimate—not a court finding—and it describes financial support over decades, not one inheritance payment.

What is behind the $400 million figure?

The rounded figure comes from The New York Times’ October 2, 2018 investigation. Based on its review of tax returns and financial records, interviews with former employees and advisers, and more than 100,000 pages of documents, the Times estimated that Donald Trump received at least $413 million in today’s dollars from his father’s real estate empire.

The Times described financial benefits extending from Donald Trump’s childhood into adulthood, through multiple routes including transfers, loans, business assistance and tax strategies. Calling the whole sum an “inheritance” would be misleading: the report did not describe one payment of $413 million.

The Times said its records included more than 200 tax returns for Fred Trump, his companies, partnerships and trusts, but did not include Donald Trump’s personal tax returns. Its estimate is therefore the newspaper’s calculation from the materials it reviewed, not a figure taken from Donald Trump’s own returns or established by a court.

How did Mary Trump contribute to the reporting?

In a 2020 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Mary Trump said that she and her brother obtained financial and tax documents during litigation over their grandfather’s estate. After Times reporter Susanne Craig contacted her, Mary said, she retrieved 19 boxes containing about 40,000 pages and provided them to the reporting team.

Mary described the Times’ work as forensic accounting that combined those documents with other sources and contacts. She said Craig persuaded her that the material could help “rewrite the financial history of Donald and my family.” Her account explains how she supplied records; the estimate itself is the Times’ conclusion based on its broader investigation.

Mary also recalled being told that Fred Trump Sr.’s estate was worth about $30 million. She contrasted that family account with the Times investigation’s picture of wealth closer to a billion dollars. This is her recollection and reaction, not an independent valuation of the estate.

What did the Times report about taxes on the family wealth?

The Times reported that Fred and Mary Trump transferred well over $1 billion in wealth to their children. It estimated that, under the 55 percent gift and inheritance tax rate then in effect, those transfers could have generated at least $550 million in taxes. The newspaper said tax records showed the family paid $52.2 million, about 5 percent of the transferred wealth.

Those figures are the Times’ estimates and description of the records it reviewed; they should not be read as a court’s finding of tax liability or evasion. The family disputed the allegations.

How did Donald Trump and his family respond?

The Times reported that Donald Trump’s lawyer, Charles J. Harder, rejected the allegations, saying they were “100 percent false” and that there was no fraud or tax evasion. Harder also called the Times’ allegations “highly defamatory.” Robert Trump, speaking for the family, said appropriate gift and estate tax returns had been filed and required taxes paid.

The dispute is best understood by keeping the accounts distinct:

Account What it says
Donald Trump’s public account, as summarized by the Times He had described receiving limited help from his father, including a $1 million loan.
The Times investigation It estimated that he received at least $413 million in today’s dollars in financial benefits over decades.
Trump’s lawyer and family They denied fraud and tax evasion and said required returns and taxes were handled appropriately.

These are competing claims and a reported estimate, not a verdict resolving every disputed tax issue.

What later legal reporting does—and does not—establish

In 2024, the Associated Press reported that the Times and its reporters had been dismissed from Donald Trump’s lawsuit over the story, while his claim against Mary Trump remained pending at that time. That report describes the case status as of its publication; it does not establish the current status of the claim against Mary, nor does a procedural development decide whether the Times’ financial estimate was accurate.

Was Donald Trump self-made?

The Times investigation challenges the portrayal of Donald Trump as having received only limited help from his father: its estimate describes substantial support in several forms across decades. Mary Trump’s contribution was to provide records she said she obtained through estate litigation. But “self-made” is a broad characterization, and the $413 million estimate should be attributed to the Times rather than presented as a judicially settled total.
