Mariah Carey criticized Sandra Bernhard’s language in a 1999 Mirabella interview after Bernhard made a joke about Carey in her 1998 comedy show. It was not a face-to-face confrontation: Carey was responding to an earlier routine, and the story resurfaced years later in separate interviews and a reported radio encounter.
What Sandra Bernhard said about Mariah Carey
Bernhard’s 1998 one-woman show I’m Still Here… Damn It! included a joke about Carey’s biracial identity and her relationships with Black men. The passage used a racial slur. The Independent recounts the material and its context; the slur is not necessary to understand why Carey objected, so it is not repeated here. The Independent’s account

What Mariah Carey said in 1999
In the May 1999 issue of Mirabella, Carey addressed the routine. She said Bernhard “used words that every African American I know — and definitely I, personally, find inappropriate.” Carey also described her ethnic background as an important and sensitive part of her life. The interview is reproduced by The Mariah Network, while SFGate reported on it at the time. The Mariah Network’s reproduction of the interview; SFGate’s contemporaneous report
That is the documented basis for saying Carey called Bernhard out. The exchange was not an interview between the two women, nor does the available reporting establish a direct confrontation in 1999. Carey’s criticism was about the words in Bernhard’s earlier performance.

What Carey and Campbell said in 2020
When Campbell raised the routine during No Filter With Naomi, she called it “so rude and disrespectful” and said, “completely racist.” Those are Campbell’s words, not Carey’s. Carey said she had been upset at the time and added: “I wish I would have called you back when it happened because I was so upset and nobody came to my rescue at that point.” The Independent’s account; Music-News.com

The reported 2018 encounter suggests they had discussed the matter: Bernhard said they had talked it through and told Carey, “I adore you.” Carey chose not to revisit the incident in that moment. That brief exchange does not establish exactly what they discussed or whether Carey considered the matter resolved. The Independent

In a 2021 Guardian profile, Bernhard said she did not regret her jokes because they reflected what she considered acceptable social commentary at the time, while also saying comedians must adapt as social norms change. The comments were about comedy more broadly, not a Carey-specific apology. The Guardian
