Mara Wilson later recalled feeling humiliated when she returned to the set of Thomas and the Magic Railroad after several months away and found that people seemed concerned about changes in her appearance. In a 2016 interview, she said the director spoke with her and sports bras intended to bind her chest were brought out. That is Wilson’s retrospective account of a difficult experience; the available sources do not establish that everyone on set deliberately mistreated her.
What Mara Wilson recalled happening
In a 2016 interview with WBEZ, Wilson described coming back to the film set after being away for several months. She said she noticed people exchanging worried looks, and recalled a conversation with the director about how her body had changed as she entered puberty. Wilson said sports bras meant to bind her chest were brought out.
Wilson described the emotional effect in stark terms: “I was horrified, I felt embarrassed, I felt like I had done something wrong even though I hadn’t.” She also recalled thinking, “I wasn’t as cute anymore because I looked halfway between a child and an adult — which is what puberty is.” These are Wilson’s words in a retrospective interview, not independently verified dialogue recorded during production. WBEZ published the interview on September 12, 2016.
What “given a hard time” does—and does not—mean
The phrase “given a hard time” summarizes Wilson’s account of feeling exposed and humiliated over changes in her appearance. The cited sources document what she said she experienced and how she felt; they do not show that every person on the production participated in deliberate bullying. Keeping that distinction clear takes nothing away from the impact Wilson described.

Wilson’s views of the film changed over time
Wilson’s account of a painful moment on set is not the whole story of her relationship with the film. In a first-person essay published in 2016, she recalled that at 11 she reacted negatively to the script because the role seemed too cute. A contemporaneous 2000 interview, by contrast, quoted her as enthusiastic about helping bring Thomas to the screen and interested in the director’s ideas. Those accounts capture different moments, rather than proving that one cancels out the other. Wilson’s retrospective essay appeared in The Guardian on September 17, 2016; SPLICEDwire’s interview dates to 2000.
