That preview was released months after a Georgia judge reportedly awarded Shannon custody on September 20, 2024; it is episode footage, not evidence that the case was still awaiting a decision.
What June Shannon said in the preview
The preview, reproduced in an AOL report about the 100th episode of Mama June: Family Crisis, shows Shannon explaining the dispute in a television confessional. She says: “Let me explain the court case to y’all. It is Michael, Anna’s ex, versus myself for custody of Kaitlyn.” The episode premiered on We TV on June 13, 2025, according to the report. AOL’s preview coverage
Shannon also says Anna wanted Kaitlyn to remain with her family, but acknowledges that Anna “never put it in writing or anything else.” That is Shannon’s recollection of Anna’s wishes, not independent confirmation of a written instruction or a legally operative directive.
Who Michael Cardwell is to Kaitlyn
Coverage describes Cardwell as Anna’s former husband and Kaitlyn’s former stepfather, rather than Kaitlyn’s biological father. He is the father of Kaitlyn’s younger half-sister, Kylee. AOL’s report and PEOPLE’s coverage

- September 23, 2024: The Ashley reported details from an order it said it obtained, including the custody and visitation terms and the denial of Cardwell’s equitable-caregiver petition. The Ashley
- June 2025: Shannon discussed the experience in a PEOPLE interview, and the series preview aired later that month. PEOPLE
What the reported ruling said
According to The Ashley’s account of the order, Kaitlyn’s legal and physical custody was to remain with Shannon. It quoted the order as saying Cardwell would have no right to visitation unless the parties and Kaitlyn expressly agreed. The outlet also reported that the judge denied Cardwell’s equitable-caregiver petition. The original order is not available in the cited coverage, so these terms are best understood as that outlet’s report of the document rather than an independently reviewed court record.
The Ashley further reported that the judge found Cardwell had not established standing as an equitable caregiver, citing the court’s view that he would have needed to accept parental responsibility fully and permanently without expecting financial compensation. The outlet said the order found he had not provided significant financial support and that the court heard Kaitlyn’s preference. These are details attributed to the reported order; they should not be treated as a general explanation of Georgia law.

What is established—and what remains attributed
- The preview establishes what Shannon said on camera: she characterized the case as a contest between herself and Anna’s former husband, and said Anna had expressed a wish for Kaitlyn to stay with family without putting that wish in writing.
- The later reported outcome is distinct from the preview: PEOPLE-republished reporting places the custody award on September 20, 2024, before the June 2025 episode preview.
- Anna’s wishes are presented here through Shannon’s recollection: the cited coverage does not establish a written directive from Anna.
- The order’s details come through secondary reporting: the available account quotes and summarizes the order, but the original court document is not directly reviewed here.
