The headline’s “don’t feel real” is praise for visual impact, not a claim that animation is realistic. This article does not name fifteen specific scenes. No verifiable source list for them was available to check, so nothing here attributes a particular series, film, episode or studio to the headline. Instead, it explains the techniques that make fight animation hit hard and gives you a way to judge any scene yourself.
What “don’t feel real” actually praises
Animated action is not filmed motion. Every pose, smear and impact is drawn or assembled on purpose, so “realistic” is the wrong yardstick. Viewers who call a fight unreal usually mean that a strike carries unusual weight, that a body snaps into a pose that seems to hold its own force, or that an effect makes an invisible force visible. Those reactions come from deliberate decisions, which is why the same fight can feel flat in one cut and overwhelming in another.
How animators make fights feel heavier than life
Most of the impact comes from timing rather than from the number of drawings. These are the techniques that appear most often in striking fight animation:
- Frame rate changes within a sequence. Anime is often animated on twos, meaning each drawing is held for two frames of 24-frames-per-second footage, which gives roughly 12 drawings per second. Fight sequences frequently switch to ones, one drawing per frame, for short bursts of speed or for the moment of contact, so motion looks sharper exactly when it matters.
- Anticipation holds. A wind-up that pauses for a beat before the strike makes the hit land harder, because the viewer has time to register the force about to be released.
- Impact frames. A single frame of distorted or stylised art, often a flash or a burst of lines, marks contact. Because it lasts only a moment, it reads as a jolt rather than a drawing.
- Hit-stop. Both characters freeze for a few frames after contact. The convention is shared with video games and makes a blow feel like it has mass.
- Smears and speed lines. Hand-drawn blur turns a fast limb into an arc the eye can follow, which keeps a rapid exchange readable.
- Camera placement. Cuts timed to contact, low angles on the attacker and tight framing on the receiver shape how much force the audience feels.
Why legibility matters as much as spectacle
A fight only feels impressive if viewers can follow what happened. Chris Goto-Jones, writing in Martial Arts Studies in 2019, discusses the 2004 semi-final of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike between Justin Wong and Daigo Umehara. The paper describes Umehara’s parry sequence against a fifteen-hit attack and argues that the moment’s appeal can be hard for unfamiliar viewers to understand. That is a video-game match, not an anime fight. It is useful here only as an example of how spectacle depends on readability. The paper is available via ResearchGate.

The same paper quotes Seth Killian, then at Capcom, saying “only around one per cent of people who watch that video really know what’s going on”. The paper attributes the remark to 2012. It is a quoted comment, not a measured figure about how many viewers understand fight animation, and the paper gives no method behind it.
A checklist for judging any fight scene
These five criteria separate scenes that feel powerful from scenes that only look busy. Use them on any sequence you are considering.

- Ideal size: toy size: about 28cm/11 inches,Action Figure Classic cartoon image, the best holiday gift

- Collector: No matter what angle you look at, the collector can appreciate its perfect posture, suitable for collection
| Criterion | What to look for | What usually goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Clarity of action | You can tell who strikes whom, from where, and what the result is | Fast cuts or overlapping effects hide the contact |
| Timing and spacing | Anticipation before a blow, a clear impact moment, and recovery afterward | Every frame moves at the same speed, so nothing has weight |
| Choreography | Moves follow the logic of each character’s style, range and injuries | Attacks look impressive but ignore distance, balance or earlier damage |
| Visual effects | Effects amplify force that the drawings already suggest | Glow, particles and filters bury the animation underneath |
| Story service | The exchange changes a relationship, a goal or the stakes | Spectacle with no consequence, which tends to fade quickly on rewatch |
How to test a scene yourself
- Watch the sequence once at full speed to get the overall read of the exchange.
- Watch it again and pause on the first contact frame, then on the frame just after it. If the impact is readable at both points, the timing is working.
- If your player supports frame stepping, step through the wind-up and the recovery. Many desktop players offer keyboard shortcuts for this; check the player’s own help menu for the keys.
- If you can find more than one version of the same sequence, compare an original broadcast cut with a later re-edit or remaster. Re-edits can change cut points and frame timing, which can make the same fight feel stronger or weaker.
- Note whether the scene still works when you slow it down. Strong animation keeps its shape at reduced speed; weak sequences often rely on blur and speed to hide their structure.
The Bottom Line
The headline measures impact, not realism. A fight looks unreal when animators control timing, contact and camera with precision, and it stops working when viewers cannot read what happens. Use the checklist and frame-by-frame test above to decide whether a particular scene earns the praise.
