Kiran Desai’s 2025 novel treats loneliness as more than the ache of unreturned love. She says its scope widened to include separations shaped by class and race, distrust between nations, and the disappearance of a past world. These are connected forms of distance in the book’s imaginative framework—not interchangeable experiences or a clinical diagnosis.
What does loneliness mean in the novel?
Desai says she began with a modern love story, but writing across generations and places led her to broaden the idea. “As I wrote across geographies and generations, I realised that I could widen the scope of my novel, to write about loneliness in a much broader sense. Not just romantic loneliness, but the huge divides of class and race, the distrust between nations, the swift vanishing of a past world – all of which can be seen as forms of loneliness,” she told The Booker Prizes.
That account supports reading loneliness as cultural and systemic: not simply a private feeling, but also a separation produced or intensified by social divisions, national suspicion, and historical change. The distinction matters. Romantic longing, exclusion across class or race, and the loss of a familiar past may all create distance, but they are not the same experience.
How Sonia and Sunny’s story makes that distance personal
The novel follows Sonia, an aspiring novelist who returns to India after studying in Vermont, and Sunny, a struggling journalist living in New York. Their families have tried to arrange a match. The publisher’s synopsis places their lives amid family conflict and the pressures of country, class, race, history, and generational bonds; the pair first glimpse one another on an overnight train. See the Hogarth and Penguin Random House publisher page for the synopsis and edition details.

Desai describes Sonia and Sunny as lovers who “meet and part across Europe, India and America, their idea of themselves turning ever more fluid.” The Indian Express interview names settings including Vermont, Allahabad, New Delhi, Goa, Rajasthan, New York, Mexico, and Italy. Their movement makes belonging unsettled: family, place, and inherited identity remain influential, while migration and separation complicate any single idea of home. The settings are not interchangeable, nor does this amount to a simple East-versus-West contrast.
Private solitude and social separation are related, not identical
Desai’s account leaves room for solitude to be difficult and sustaining. In the Indian Express interview, she says, “So, I experienced all those different kinds of loneliness, the more difficult kinds, but also the solitude that I see as a kind of sustenance. I see the value of being alone as an opportunity for self-reinvention,” She also says a writer’s job is to root politics in personal experience: “how little we know of each other and the divides that we have to overcome.”

That pairing helps explain why the novel’s social concerns belong in a love story. Solitude can create room for artistic work or a changed sense of self; imposed distance tied to class, race, national distrust, or family conflict carries different pressures. Desai’s stated aim is to bring those divides into intimate lives rather than treat politics as separate from personal relationships.
