Sony’s preview establishes the film’s 28-year time jump and an isolated survivor community, but it does not spell out what every image means.
What happens in the first 28 Years Later trailer?
Sony Pictures’ December 10, 2024 announcement describes the trailer opening with children watching television. A woman warns of an emergency, followed by a bloody image. A title card then marks the passage of 10,228 days—28 years—before the preview shifts into a largely dialogue-free sequence of mysterious words, repetitive music and stark images.

The footage moves between an island community and the threats beyond it. Viewers see posted rules and a lookout, a man and boy carrying primitive weapons, soldiers, an emaciated figure, a mound of skulls, and a hanging corpse that begins to move. The trailer also shows a woman holding a baby. Sony’s description presents these as images from the preview, not as a complete explanation of their context or the film’s plot. [Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan’s trailer announcement]
The trailer’s accompanying overseas poster carried the all-caps tagline “TIME DIDN’T HEAL ANYTHING.” That is poster copy, rather than a line of dialogue identified by Sony.

- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
What is the film’s premise?
Sony’s official synopsis places the story nearly three decades after the Rage Virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Some survivors remain under enforced quarantine. One community lives on an island linked to the mainland by a single heavily defended causeway. When someone leaves for the mainland, they encounter dangers and secrets among both infected people and other survivors. [Sony Pictures’ official film page]
That setup gives the trailer’s guarded island and armed lookout a clear frame: the community is cut off, but not entirely sealed away from the outside world. The preview does not identify every person or event shown, so its images should not be treated as a scene-by-scene plot summary.

- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
Who made 28 Years Later, and who is in the cast?
Danny Boyle directed 28 Years Later, and Alex Garland wrote it. Sony’s announcement also credits both as producers. The cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams; Cillian Murphy is an executive producer. [Sony’s announcement and credits]
In a June 16, 2025 interview with TIME, the actors’ roles were identified as Williams’s Spike, Taylor-Johnson’s Jamie, Comer’s Isla and Fiennes’s Dr. Kelson. Those character details come from the later interview, not from Sony’s description of the first trailer. [TIME’s June 16, 2025 interview with Danny Boyle]

Are the creatures zombies or infected?
Boyle has drawn a distinction between the infected in this franchise and the undead. “We had this thing about, ‘No, they’re not zombies. They’re infected,’” he told TIME. “We wanted them to behave in a different way physically, but they also weren’t undead. They could die and they will die, but so will you if they catch you.” [TIME, June 16, 2025]
That description is useful context for the trailer’s threat: the Rage Virus has made people dangerous, but Boyle describes them as living and mortal, not reanimated corpses. His interview also discusses a larger, stronger infected type called Alphas and infected that hunt in packs. Those details provide wider film context; Sony’s first-trailer description does not establish that every one of them appears in the preview.

Why is the story set in the UK?
Boyle told TIME that keeping the story in Britain was a deliberate choice. “We wanted to do something that forced us to look at our own land rather than having the virus become an international contagion, as was hinted at by 28 Weeks Later,” he said. He described a story in which British characters must deal with the crisis themselves, without an outside force arriving to save them. [TIME, June 16, 2025]
The interview connects Boyle’s thinking about the setting and rebuilding society to Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. That is his account of the ideas behind the film, not the only possible way to interpret its images. The first trailer foregrounds isolation and survival; its limited explanation leaves room for the audience to judge what the community’s rules and defenses mean.

What is the song in the 28 Years Later trailer?
The trailer uses repetitive music and mysterious words, but Sony’s December 10, 2024 announcement does not identify a track or provide a verified song credit. The music’s unsettling repetition is part of the preview’s atmosphere; naming a song without a confirmed credit would be speculation. [Sony’s trailer announcement]
When did 28 Years Later come out?
Sony announced a U.S. release date of June 20, 2025. That date is now historical: the film opened in the United States on that day. [Sony’s December 10, 2024 announcement]
For current home-viewing options, Sony’s film page says the movie is available on Blu-ray and Digital and lists retailers and digital options. It specifies that 4K HDR playback requires a 4K UHD HDR television, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and high-speed HDMI 2.0A cables. Exact editions, stock and prices can vary, so check the current listing before buying. [Sony’s film page and viewing options]
How does the first trailer fit the wider franchise?
28 Years Later returns to the world of 28 Days Later after a much longer time jump than the original title. The trailer’s quarantine and defended causeway make the survival problem feel communal as well as personal: the infected are a threat, but the survivors must also decide how to live with one another. Boyle told TIME that the films were conceived as “three films that are complete and satisfying in their own right, but are linked,” with “a character arc that runs throughout.” That describes his plan at the time of the June 2025 interview. [TIME interview]
Sony’s current franchise page identifies 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple as a direct follow-up. That later sequel is separate from what the first 28 Years Later trailer reveals. [Sony’s franchise page]
