Lili Reinhart publicly disclosed that she had been diagnosed with alopecia in a TikTok post reported on January 30, 2024. She said the diagnosis came “in the midst of a major depressive episode,” but did not say depression caused her hair loss. The coverage did not identify an alopecia subtype or establish her current health status.
What did Lili Reinhart disclose?
ABC News reported that Reinhart’s TikTok video included the text: “Was just diagnosed with alopecia in the midst of a major depressive episode.” The video showed her doing red-light therapy, and its caption read: “Red light therapy is my new best friend. #alopecia #mentalhealth.” ABC News, January 30, 2024

The reports do not name a type. “Alopecia” is a general term, so the public wording does not establish that Reinhart has alopecia areata or any other specific subtype. The coverage also does not describe how much hair she had lost.

Did depression cause her hair loss?
Reinhart’s wording places the diagnosis during a major depressive episode. It establishes when she said the diagnosis occurred, not that depression caused her alopecia. The cited reports do not provide a medical explanation for her hair loss.
What is known about red-light therapy?
Her caption referred to red-light therapy, but it does not establish a particular device, a prescribed treatment plan, or that the therapy worked for her. SELF cautioned that more studies are needed to gauge its effectiveness. That context is not a treatment recommendation for Reinhart or anyone else.
