Spoilers for Season 8, Episodes 14 and 15. Chimney survives the virus cliffhanger in “Sick Day,” but Bobby dies in “Lab Rats.” The two episodes form the “Contagion” story: Part 1 ends with the cure missing and the 118 in danger; Part 2 reveals who was exposed and who makes it out.
What happens at the end of “Sick Day”?
Scientist Moira’s virus work triggers a fire and explosion at the lab. Hen is badly injured and has a collapsed lung. As Bobby helps with the procedure that saves her, Chimney develops symptoms.
Ravi finds the container meant to hold the cure, but it is empty: Moira has taken the cure and escaped into a crowd. The episode ends with the responders still in danger. A Part 2 promo taunts, “You’re dead wrong,” but that line is a suspense hook, not confirmation of which character will die. TVLine’s April 10, 2025 recap covers the cliffhanger and promo.
Who survives the virus in Part 2?
In “Lab Rats,” Buck and Athena obtain the cure, and Moira is arrested. Chimney receives the treatment and survives. Hen also survives the emergency procedure that began in the first episode.

Why does Bobby die?
Bobby tells Buck that he was exposed too, a fact he had kept from the team. After saying goodbye to Athena and praying, he is carried out in a body bag.
As CinemaBlend reported on April 18, 2025, showrunner Tim Minear said choosing Bobby was difficult, but he wanted the death to have “the maximum effect for every character story.” Minear described Bobby’s death as “the tragic, logical culmination of his arc”: Bobby came to Los Angeles with a death wish, learned to love life again, and ultimately sacrificed himself because it was necessary. Minear called that “true redemption.” CinemaBlend reproduced these remarks from Minear’s interview with Entertainment Weekly.

What the cliffhanger sets up
The first episode leaves viewers with a missing cure, an infected or symptomatic Chimney, and a team still facing a dangerous lab emergency. The preview heightens the uncertainty without naming a victim. Part 2 shifts the central question: Chimney gets the cure, while Bobby’s concealed exposure makes him the fatality.

An April 11, 2025 AOL search-result extract identifies the fictionalized pathogen as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and says Moira developed a faster-acting strain before taking the antidote. AOL’s page could not be opened when that information was retrieved, so this identification is best treated as an attributed report rather than an independently verified detail. The episode’s invented outbreak and treatment mechanics are not medical guidance.
