There is no single experience of being a woman in television. Presenters and journalists may face scrutiny of their appearance, age and public persona; production workers encounter workplace conditions and pressures that are not unique to being on camera. Across the evidence, concerns include harassment, online abuse, safety, wellbeing and caring responsibilities—but the studies cover different jobs, countries and years, so their findings should not be treated as one measure of women’s lives in TV.
What does the evidence cover?
The best way to understand the findings is to keep each study’s population and method in view. A viewer study about newsreaders cannot describe the entire television workforce, and a survey of entertainment workers across several industries cannot establish how often women TV presenters experience a particular harm.

These figures describe distinct samples and outcomes; they are not directly comparable rates. The interview studies below offer accounts of experiences and perceived mechanisms, not estimates of how common those experiences are across the sector.
What pressures come with being on camera?
Appearance scrutiny
Appearance expectations are among the pressures studied specifically in news. In 2014, Mitra, Webb and Wolfe examined audience responses to television newsreaders’ physical appearance through 20 semi-structured viewer interviews and 167 questionnaires. The study concerns audience responses; it does not measure how all current presenters feel about their appearance or establish a current industry-wide standard.

An earlier survey by Engstrom and Ferri asked 128 local women anchors about their career perceptions. Respondents ranked appearance, family roles and balancing career and family among their career challenges. Published in 1998, it is useful historical evidence, not a current survey of presenters.
Age and access to on-camera work
A 2023 qualitative study based on interviews with 24 women media professionals records accounts of contracts ending or not being renewed, women being moved out of front-of-camera roles, and opportunities declining as participants reached their 40s or earlier. These testimonies describe how participants experienced gendered ageism; they do not establish a sector-wide rate or prove that age alone caused any individual employment decision.

The accounts help explain why access can feel less secure as careers progress, but they should be read as qualitative evidence rather than a prediction about every woman’s career. The House of Lords Communications Committee’s 2015 report on women in news and current-affairs broadcasting is another historical parliamentary source, not a contemporary measurement of the whole industry.
What do studies say about bullying and harassment?
The State of Play survey of almost 1,200 UK television production professionals reported that 93% of those surveyed claimed to have experienced workplace bullying or harassment incidents. This is evidence of a serious reported problem among that surveyed production population; it should not be recast as a finding about women alone, on-screen workers alone or every television employee.

The Hollywood Commission’s 2022–23 survey gathered responses from 5,259 US entertainment workers in multiple sectors. Its account describes persistent harassment and perceived weaknesses in accountability. Because the sample includes work beyond television and the cited finding is not a television-women rate, it supplies broader industry context rather than a like-for-like comparison with State of Play.
For a UK film and high-end television context, the UK Parliament’s 2025 report cites Film and TV Charity 2022 data: 12% overall and 16% of female or non-binary respondents reported sexual harassment or discrimination in the preceding year. Those are the reported proportions in the evidence cited by the committee, not a rate for all women working in TV or a direct comparison with the bullying-and-harassment measure in State of Play.

How do online abuse and safety affect women journalists?
The UK journalist safety research published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on 24 July 2026 combines a survey of 531 journalists with 55 in-depth, trauma-informed interviews. Women participants described more frequent targeting, gendered and sexualised abuse, comments focused on appearance, and greater safety concerns when working alone or in unfamiliar settings.
In the survey summary, 76% of respondents identified online abuse and harassment as the form of harm with the largest effect on the profession. That figure is about survey respondents generally—not 76% of women, TV presenters or television journalists. The interviews add detail about how gender can shape participants’ experiences, but the study’s population is journalists across roles, not only people in the television spotlight.

How do working conditions and caring responsibilities shape careers?
Visibility is only one part of the working experience. The Film and TV Charity’s Looking Glass 2022 survey drew nearly 2,000 responses on mental health and wellbeing across the UK film and television workforce. The respondent count shows the survey’s reach, but by itself it does not tell us how many people experienced a particular mental-health outcome.
A separate pandemic-era study surveyed more than 500 mothers working in unscripted UK television. It examined effects on careers, finances and mental health among women in editorial, craft, production, post-production and other roles. Its focus is specific: mothers in unscripted television during the COVID-19 pandemic. It should not be generalized to all parents, all television work or current conditions without further evidence.
How should you interpret claims about women in TV?
- Check the job population. Presenters, journalists, actors and production workers do not face identical working conditions, and several of these studies are not limited to women.
- Check the geography and date. The clearest current safety findings here are UK journalist research from 2026; other evidence ranges from a 1998 anchor survey to pandemic-era work and a broad US entertainment survey in 2022–23.
- Separate survey results from interview accounts. A survey percentage describes the responses and measure used in that sample. Interviews can reveal how people describe a problem, but do not establish how prevalent it is across a sector.
- Keep the outcome precise. Appearance scrutiny, bullying, sexual harassment, online abuse, safety and wellbeing are related concerns, but they are not interchangeable measures.
Taken together, the evidence points to a varied experience shaped by role, career stage and working conditions. It supports concerns about appearance and age in public-facing work, alongside broader problems involving harassment, abuse, wellbeing and care; it does not support a single statistic or one universal account of what life is like for every woman in television.
