Years later, Carrey recalled confronting Jones at a restaurant and hearing him say he disliked him and could not sanction his “buffoonery.” Carrey offered possible explanations, but Jones’s motives—and his account of the encounter—are not established in the available reporting.
How the reported tension began
Carrey and Jones co-starred in Batman Forever: Carrey played the Riddler, while Jones played Two-Face. The reported “feud” centers on Carrey’s recollection of a private restaurant encounter, rather than a documented public dispute between the actors.

In an interview with Norm Macdonald, reported by Fox News on October 3, 2017, Carrey said he heard Jones was dining nearby and went over to greet him. Carrey recalled asking what the problem was. According to his account, Jones replied, “I hate you. I really don’t like you,” and, “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.” Fox News reported Carrey’s recollection; it was not an independent account of the conversation.
What Carrey thought might explain it
Carrey suggested two possibilities, without presenting either as something Jones had confirmed. He speculated that his prominence in the film may have bothered Jones, saying, “I was the star and that was the problem.” He also wondered whether Jones felt uncomfortable with the broad comic style required for the film. These were Carrey’s interpretations of the reaction he described, not verified explanations of Jones’s motives.

Carrey also praised Jones as a phenomenal actor and said, “I still love him.” That comment adds warmth to Carrey’s telling, but does not establish whether the two later reconciled.

What is—and is not—known
- The story comes from Carrey’s later account of a restaurant exchange connected, in his telling, to their work on Batman Forever.
- The 2017 Fox News report relays Carrey’s interview; it is not a contemporaneous production record or an independent witness account.
- The report does not provide Jones’s version of the encounter or confirm why he may have reacted as Carrey described.
- Carrey’s suggestions about star status and comic style should therefore be treated as speculation, not settled causes of a feud.
