“Kouri Richins breaks silence” referred to jailhouse recordings reported by People on May 23, 2024, ahead of an NBC Dateline broadcast. Richins used them to reiterate her claims of innocence, criticize media coverage and discuss her lawyers’ withdrawal. Those statements were hers; they were not findings about the case. Since then, she has been convicted and sentenced, and later reporting has charted her post-trial efforts and appeal.
What Kouri Richins said in the recordings
People reported that Richins said she felt “locked away from my kids, my family, my life” and that it was “time to start speaking up.” She also said, “You took an innocent mom away from her babies,” followed by, “And this means war.” These quotations were reproduced from the jailhouse recordings in People’s May 23, 2024 report. Her description of herself as innocent was a claim, not an established fact.
In the recordings, Richins reiterated that she was innocent and objected to media coverage. “Breaks silence” was the framing for this set of reported recordings; it does not establish that she had never made any statement before.
Why her defense team withdrew
Richins said the withdrawal of her defense team “was not my choice.” People reported that lead attorney Skye Lazaro’s filing cited an unspecified “irreconcilable and nonwaivable situation.” The filing did not publicly explain the phrase in the account.

The same report said the defense alleged prosecutors had listened to recorded jail calls between Richins and her attorneys without consent. That was an allegation reported in connection with the withdrawal, not a judicial finding established by the report.
The case behind the headline
Eric Richins died in March 2022. At the time of the May 2024 report, Kouri Richins had been arrested in May 2023 and was accused of killing her husband by lacing his drink with fentanyl. That description is the prosecution’s accusation as reported before trial, not a verdict at that point in the case.

The case also drew attention to Are You With Me?, a self-published children’s book Richins wrote about coping with a parent’s death. The Associated Press described the book in February 2026. That reporting establishes its connection to the story, but not whether it is currently available from a retailer.

The later proceedings change how the 2024 remarks should be read: they were made while the criminal case was pending, before the jury’s conviction. The June account is a dated snapshot of the appeal schedule; it does not establish whether dates were set afterward.
