King Charles reportedly urged Prince William not to let royal duty crowd out family life. That account comes from royal biographer Ingrid Seward, who recalled the private conversation; the coverage does not include a recording or independent confirmation from Charles or William.
What was the parenting mistake?
Seward said Charles warned William against putting duty before family. The Royal Observer quoted her recollection of the advice: “And don’t make the mistake that I made, and you know, put duty before family.” In a 2025 account connected to Channel 5’s documentary William and Catherine: Putting Family First, Marie Claire quoted Seward describing Charles as saying, “Please don’t make the mistake that I made” and “I want you to enjoy your family life.” Both reports present the exchange as Seward’s account of a private conversation, not as a verified transcript. According to Seward, the conversation took place before Charles became king, when he was Prince of Wales. Her account frames his advice as a warning from his own experience: make space for family rather than allowing royal responsibilities to take precedence.
What has Prince William said about parenting?
Separately, William has spoken publicly about how his parents’ divorce shaped his approach to raising his own children. In remarks from The Reluctant Traveler, reported by The Daily Beast on October 3, 2025, he said: “You take that and you learn from it and you try and make sure you don’t do the same mistakes as your parents.”

William also said he wanted to do what was best for his children and that “the drama and the stress when you’re small really affects you when you’re older.” He described wanting a warm, safe, secure and loving home, and said he takes a strong line against media intrusion into family life. These are William’s own reported comments; they support the broader theme of protecting family life, but they do not confirm the conversation Seward described. The Daily Beast’s report.

In August 2024, IBTimes UK reported on Robert Jobson’s book Catherine, the Princess of Wales, attributing to Jobson the account that William believed Charles’s work-first approach had harmed their father-son relationship. The article also said Jobson wrote that William and Harry sometimes felt “a little lost and alone during childhood.” This is a separately attributed account from a book, not independent confirmation of Seward’s reported exchange. A separate Marie Claire story about Jobson’s The Windsor Legacy describes disagreements between Charles and William over a proposal to destroy ivory artifacts in the Royal Collection. That dispute concerns a different subject and does not establish what Charles said about parenting.

What is established—and what remains attributed?
- The reported advice: Seward says Charles encouraged William to put family life ahead of royal duty.
- The source of the private-conversation claim: It is Seward’s recollection, relayed in media coverage; no direct recording or independent confirmation is cited in those reports.
- William’s public perspective: William has spoken about learning from his parents’ experience and trying to protect his children from stress and intrusion.
- The distinction: William’s remarks align with the family-life theme, but they do not verify Seward’s account of what Charles told him.
