What kind of pen does Trump use?
The best-supported answer is a Sharpie marker, often described as wide-tipped. The Associated Press reported that Trump used a wide-tipped Sharpie while signing executive orders during his first week back in office in January 2025. What is known about his Sharpies?
First-term writing preference
A July 11, 2024, New York court filing summarizing former White House aide Madeleine Westerhout’s testimony says Trump “preferred to sign things himself” and “liked to use a Sharpie or a felt-tip pen.” It also says he typically read documents before signing them. Wide-tipped marker at 2025 signings
The January 2025 AP account describes a wide-tipped Sharpie at executive-order signings. It does not give a precise tip width, so the description should not be taken as a particular size or SKU.

Custom black-and-gold marker in 2026
At a Cabinet meeting on March 26, 2026, Trump held up a custom black-and-gold Sharpie and described working with the company on a black marker bearing a gold White House logo. AP reported Trump saying he insisted on paying $5 per marker; that is his account, not independently verified transaction data. AP also compared typical Sharpies at roughly $1–$2 apiece. Is the exact model known?
No. The reporting supports a brand association—Sharpie—and, in the 2025 signing account, a wide-tipped marker. It does not establish a precise model, tip width, or retail SKU. Nor does the 2026 report show that the custom White House-logo marker is identical to a standard retail Sharpie. A black Sharpie permanent marker may be similar, but there is no evidence here that it is Trump’s exact marker.
