In a November 2024 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Kieran Culkin said his sister Dakota’s death in 2008 took away “a big piece” of himself and one of his favorite people. Sixteen years on, he said, grief had not become easier; he had learned to live with it. He also recognized Dakota’s humor in parts of his Succession character, Roman Roy.

What did Kieran Culkin say about his sister Dakota?

Culkin spoke about Dakota in a November 2024 CBS Sunday Morning interview, sixteen years after she died. The interview transcript, republished by Truth Network, quotes him describing how closely his sense of self was tied to his siblings: “I only knew who I was because of who my siblings are, so to lose one was losing a big piece of myself, but losing one of my favorite people in the world.” Read the CBS Sunday Morning interview transcript.

He also spoke about Dakota’s sense of humor. Culkin said he recognized aspects of it in Roman Roy, the sharp-tongued character he plays in Succession. He recalled that Dakota knew how to make fun of someone in a way that landed and made a room laugh. That was Culkin’s personal observation about a quality he saw in both his sister and the character, not a claim that Roman was based on Dakota.

How did Dakota’s death affect Kieran Culkin?

Culkin said that the loss remained painful rather than fading with time. In the CBS interview, he put it plainly: “It doesn’t get better. It doesn’t get easier.” He added, “It’s just you get used to it, I guess.” His comments describe his experience; they are not a formula for how every person grieves.

Dakota died in 2008 after being struck by a vehicle. The CBS transcript describes it as being “struck and killed by an automobile.” The transcript of Culkin’s 2024 interview supports that broad account; this article does not specify her age, location or the sequence of the accident.

What Culkin said about grief in other interviews

In 2021, he recalled returning to work

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Culkin recalled that Dakota’s death came shortly before filming began on Scott Pilgrim. At first, he could not imagine working. He then panicked that he needed to return to the film, and later said he was proud of it and grateful he had found the courage to go back. Read The Guardian’s 2021 interview.

In comments reported that October, Culkin said he accepted that the loss would be permanent and “never going to be fine”; he also described it as something that would always be devastating. Fox News reported on those 2021 comments.

In December 2024, he said he still thinks of her often

In a later 2024 interview with The Guardian, Culkin said he thinks about Dakota often and visits where she is buried. Those remarks, like his comments about grief in November, show that she remained part of his thoughts and life. Read The Guardian’s December 2024 interview.
