Donald died on June 20, 2024, at age 88.
What Kiefer Sutherland said in his tribute
On June 20, 2024, Kiefer announced his father’s death and shared a personal tribute. The Associated Press reproduced his post on X in full:
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
The tribute was both an expression of grief and a concise portrait of the actor Kiefer knew: someone who embraced work across the spectrum of roles, without being put off by whether a character was good, bad or ugly. Its final words, “A life well lived,” turned that admiration into a farewell.
