Kathleen Kennedy’s reported message was that criticism would not change the creative choices she had made or the collaborators she had chosen. The phrase “Star Wars Won’t Be Changing for Those Complaining” is a headline paraphrase, not a verified verbatim quote from Kennedy.

What did Kathleen Kennedy say about Star Wars fans?

A Yahoo search-result excerpt of Kennedy’s Deadline exit interview attributes this remark to her: “I understand why some people may like certain things more than others, but that’s not going to change why I decided to do certain things and why I decided to work with the people that we worked with.”

The same excerpt describes Kennedy characterizing “a very, very small percentage of the fan base” as having “enormous expectations” and wanting “to continue to see pretty much the same thing.” Those fragments are reported through Yahoo’s rendering of the interview; the original Deadline page and full transcript were not available for direct confirmation. The excerpts do not establish how many fans held those views.

What was the context of Kennedy’s exit interview?

The comments were reported in the context of Kennedy’s departure from Lucasfilm. The Associated Press reported in January 2026 that she was stepping down after more than 13 years leading the studio. Disney named Dave Filoni president and chief creative officer, and Lynwen Brennan co-president. The Associated Press’s report on the leadership change also described a mixed reception to projects during Kennedy’s tenure: it called The Last Jedi divisive, noted criticism of The Rise of Skywalker, and cited streaming successes including The Mandalorian and Andor.

That history is not evidence of a single, unified fan response. Reactions differed across films and series, and Kennedy’s reported comments addressed creative choices and audience expectations rather than settling whether any particular project was well received.

How did Kennedy discuss fan feedback and online attacks before?

Fan feedback and the franchise’s direction

In a 2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kennedy said fan input mattered to Lucasfilm’s decisions and discussed moving beyond the Skywalker family saga toward new storytelling. The interview provides useful context: her later reported comment that criticism would not reverse her own creative decisions should not be read as a claim that fan feedback had never mattered.

Remarks about women in the fandom

In 2024, while discussing The Acolyte and reactions to the series, Kennedy told the Los Angeles Times, “My belief is that storytelling does need to be representative of all people.” She also said, “Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying.” The 2024 interview reported her view that women working in Star Wars can face personal attacks in a male-dominated fandom.

Those remarks concern personal attacks and representation; they do not establish that all criticism of Star Wars was discriminatory or that every complaint was about representation. Criticism of creative choices, expectations for franchise storytelling, and personal abuse are distinct matters.

What the headline does—and does not—mean

The headline captures the gist of Kennedy’s reported position: disagreement would not make her undo choices she had made or change why she worked with particular collaborators. It should not be presented as her exact wording. Because the full Deadline interview was not directly available for confirmation, its precise publication date, the question that prompted the remarks, and the relationship between the interview’s wording and the headline remain unconfirmed.
