Vogue described the look as nautical-inspired, a fitting visual choice for the ship’s launch ceremony.
What did Kate Middleton wear to the HMS Glasgow naming ceremony?
Vogue identified the outfit as a navy coat dress by Suzannah London, finished with white trim, and paired with a matching wide-brimmed hat and nude pumps. The more specific garment name reported by What Kate Wore is Suzannah London’s “Simple Coat Dress in Navy.” The site described it as lightweight Italian wool crepe with a silk lining.
The outfit’s details—the dark navy fabric, crisp white edging and structured hat—gave it a maritime feel without being a uniform. Vogue read the styling as suited to the naval setting. That is a fashion interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the Princess’s intentions.
Why did Vogue compare the look with Princess Diana’s?
Vogue noted a retro quality in the outfit and compared it with a Catherine Walker ensemble Princess Diana wore in 1993 for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. The comparison is Vogue’s; there is no confirmation that Catherine intended to reference Diana.

What was the ceremony in Scotland?
The Princess attended the HMS Glasgow naming ceremony at BAE Systems’ shipbuilding facility in Scotstoun, Glasgow, on 22 May 2025. She was the ship’s sponsor and performed the ceremonial naming. According to the Royal Navy’s event report, she activated the device that released whisky against the hull, then said: “I name this ship Glasgow. May God bless her and all who serve in her.”
A ship’s sponsor attends key milestones, keeps informed about the sailors’ activities, and offers support and representation for the vessel and its crew, the Royal Navy explains. HMS Glasgow is the first of eight UK Type 26 frigates, according to the government announcement.

What Kate Wore reported a price when it covered the outfit in May 2025, but that historical listing does not establish the garment’s current price or availability. The outfit identification is useful for anyone looking for the original design; a similar navy coat dress with contrasting trim would be an alternative, not the same garment.
