Kamala Harris called Donald Trump’s remarks about her racial identity “the same old show” and said Americans deserved a leader who tells the truth and does not answer facts with hostility or anger. She made the comments at a Houston campaign event on July 31, 2024, later the same day Trump questioned her identity at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.
What Trump said at the NABJ convention
During a question-and-answer session at the July 31, 2024, convention, ABC News reporter Rachel Scott asked Trump whether he believed Harris was on the presidential ticket only because she was a Black woman. Trump said he had thought of her as being of Indian heritage and had not known she was Black until “a number of years ago.” He then said she had “happened to turn Black” and asked, “So, I don’t know. Is she Indian? Or is she Black?” CNN’s transcript of the exchange records the remarks.

Scott responded that Harris had always identified as a Black woman and had attended a historically Black college. The exchange concerned Trump’s claim about how Harris identified; it did not mean her ancestry had changed. Harris has both Black and Indian heritage.
How Harris responded later that day
At a campaign event in Houston, Harris addressed Trump’s appearance and called it “the same old show,” describing it as divisive and disrespectful. She said: “The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth. A leader who does not respond with hostility and anger, when confronted with the facts. We deserve a leader, who understands that our differences do not divide us.” CNN’s July 31 broadcast transcript records her response.
