The coyote warning leaves that danger hanging rather than resolving it.
Does Tommy take over M-Tex?
Yes. After Monty’s heart condition worsens and he dies, his succession plan names Tommy to lead M-Tex. Tommy moves from solving problems in the field to executive responsibility for the company. That is a promotion he is not eager to accept: actor Billy Bob Thornton said of Tommy, “He does not want to be an executive guy.” His experience as a landman may help him understand the operation, but the finale establishes the appointment—not that he has mastered the job.

Monty’s death also leaves the company with consequential decisions still in play, including a farm-out decision begun under Monty. Cami becomes more involved in M-Tex’s day-to-day affairs, adding another shift in how the company is run. The finale sets up these pressures without settling how Tommy will handle them.
Why did Gallino save Tommy?
Tommy’s new job arrives alongside a near-fatal kidnapping. After a well is blown up, Jimenez’s men abduct and torture him. Gallino arrives, kills Jimenez and his crew, and releases Tommy. Co-creator Christian Wallace said Jimenez had overstepped, and that Gallino’s intervention confirmed Tommy’s suspicion that Jimenez was acting without permission to go that far.

#1 Best Overall
That rescue is not a clean break from the cartel. Gallino has demonstrated that he can intervene in Tommy’s life and the oil business; the finale leaves Tommy with an entanglement that brings both obligation and risk. It does not explain every term of their relationship or show that the danger has passed.
What does the coyote warning mean?
The finale ends on a coyote line that works as an ominous button after the cartel violence. It can be read as an echo of the predatory world Tommy has just survived and a warning that danger remains nearby. Wallace discussed the line, but the ending does not establish one definitive symbolic meaning or make it a literal forecast. It leaves Tommy’s new risks unresolved.

At home, Angela recognizes the danger Tommy faces and tries to keep the family together. Wallace described the family as volatile and Angela’s hard exterior as partly shielding real care. That is a character reading from the co-creator, not a confirmed resolution of the family’s problems.

The Season 1-era interviews described possibilities, not guarantees: Thornton discussed Tommy’s reluctance to become an executive, while Wallace said the show could explore Tommy’s leadership, Cami’s expanded role, and the uneasy overlap between legitimate oil operations and Gallino’s illegal business.

There is now a sequel update. Paramount+ reported on January 30, 2026, that Season 2 had wrapped and the series had been renewed for Season 3. Its recap says Tommy begins as M-Tex president after Monty’s death, faces the company’s financial trouble, and discovers that Gallino-backed funding has reached Cooper’s oil operation. Those later developments update the Season 1 setup; they do not change what the finale itself confirms. Read Paramount+’s Landman recap and series update. Paramount+ says both seasons stream on its service; availability may vary by territory.
