Kaley Cuoco said she felt the person she married had changed by the time their marriage ended. In a 2018 interview for Cosmopolitan, she recalled: “I married someone the first time who completely changed. The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met.” That was her personal account, shared nearly three years after she and professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting announced their separation; it does not independently establish why they divorced.
What did Kaley Cuoco say about her first marriage?
In comments from Cosmopolitan’s May 2018 issue, Cuoco described a gap between the person she believed she had married and the person she felt she ended up with. ABC News quoted her saying, “I married someone the first time who completely changed. The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met.” ABC News reported the remark on April 3, 2018.
The phrase “completely changed” is Cuoco’s retrospective characterization. It should not be presented as an independently verified description of Sweeting or as proof of a particular cause of the divorce.
When did Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting separate?
Cuoco and Sweeting announced in September 2015 that they had decided to end their marriage. In the contemporaneous report, TIME quoted a representative saying the couple had “mutually decided to end their marriage” and requested privacy. The statement confirmed their decision but did not give a reason.

How long were they married?
ABC News and TIME each reported that the marriage lasted 21 months. The figure is the duration reported by those outlets, rather than an explanation of what led to the separation.
What is known about the reason for the divorce?
The public accounts cited here establish two things: Cuoco later said she felt the person she married had changed, and the couple’s representative said they had mutually decided to end the marriage. Neither account provides an independently established cause. The dramatic “nightmare” framing sometimes attached to the story goes beyond what those statements establish.
