Stephen Colbert reportedly asked Judge Judy Sheindlin during the 2016 campaign whether she would consider being Donald Trump’s vice-presidential running mate. She did not describe a job offer or a salary from Trump. Her reported answer was that she lacked government experience, was too old for the work and did not think the vice presidency paid enough.
What did Stephen Colbert ask Judge Judy?
A MarketRealist account published December 24, 2024 places the exchange during Trump’s 2016 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. It says Colbert first asked whether Trump had taken notes from Sheindlin’s direct style, then asked whether she would consider being Trump’s running mate and vice president.

The available accounts describe a hypothetical question about the vice presidency—not Trump offering Sheindlin a position or paying her a salary. The headline’s “getting a salary from Donald Trump” phrasing is a loose description of the exchange, not evidence of an offer.
What was Judge Judy’s reported response?
IMDb’s biography of Judy Sheindlin reproduces this attributed answer: “It would be nice if he had somebody who had good experience with government to act as a running mate. That would seem logical to me, and quite frankly, I don’t. I know the family court, and I know my little television courtroom, and I’m too old, and I don’t like to work so hard…and it doesn’t pay enough.”

In that account, Sheindlin’s reasoning moved from qualifications to the practicalities of the job: she knew family court and her television courtroom, but not government; she considered herself too old, disliked working so hard and thought the position did not pay enough. MarketRealist gives a similar, though not identical, rendering and reports that Colbert called the vice presidency boring.

The exchange is associated with the 2016 campaign period, and a BroadwayWorld report dated May 6, 2016 also identifies the subject as Sheindlin declining to be Trump’s vice president. That report corroborates the running-mate context but does not establish the original episode’s exact air date.

The quotation above is a secondary-source rendering, not wording independently checked against an official transcript or original clip. The accounts therefore support the gist and reported punchline, but not a claim that every word is a verified transcript.
