When Stewart joked that Punch’s troop had decided he was “problematic,” the audience objected—and he turned their reaction into part of the joke.
What did Jon Stewart say about Punch?
Stewart’s segment was taped on Monday, February 23, 2026, after The Daily Show returned from a week off, according to LateNighter’s account. He began by referring to Punch’s stuffed comfort monkey, then suggested there was “probably something wrong with that [f*cking] monkey.”
Stewart continued the deliberately harsh premise by asking, “who are we to question the wisdom of the tribe?” and speculating that the other monkeys “know him best” and “decided he’s problematic.” When the audience voiced disapproval, he called them “little monkey experts” and said, “F*ck all y’all!” He also joked that even Punch’s stuffed toy looked as if it would rather be living comfortably in Westchester. LateNighter described the crowd as roaring its disapproval as Stewart riffed on the reaction.
Why did the audience boo?
The audience’s reaction was the comic engine of the exchange: Stewart took viewers’ sympathy for Punch and pushed an intentionally unkind-sounding alternative—that perhaps the troop knew the monkey better than people watching clips did. When the crowd objected, he acted mock-indignant and escalated the bit. LateNighter’s report presents the moment as playful audience banter, not as a formal controversy or an apology.

Stewart himself signaled the shift in tone with the line, “Sometimes it’s going to go from funny to mean. That’s just what happens.” The joke should not be read as an assessment of Punch’s character or a claim that the macaque deserved mistreatment.
Who is Punch the monkey?
Punch is a Japanese macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. PBS reported in February 2026 that he was then seven months old and had been abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. Keepers gave him a stuffed animal, which became a widely shared part of his story.

Zookeeper Kosuke Shikano explained that the toy’s long fur and easy-to-grip features were useful. Staff also hoped a monkey-like toy might help Punch integrate with the troop. Shikano described it as having “quite long fur and several easy places to hold,” according to PBS’s report. That account documents practical features; it does not identify a specific retail model as the zoo’s toy.
Do clips show Punch being bullied?
Short clips can look upsetting to people, but they do not by themselves establish what an interaction means within macaque society—or diagnose Punch’s welfare. PBS quoted Alison Behie, a primatology expert at Australian National University, explaining that Japanese macaques live in strict matrilineal dominance hierarchies. She said aggression is a normal part of their social behavior, even when an encounter looks like bullying to human viewers.

Later reporting described progress in Punch’s relationships with the troop. On April 17, 2026, ABC News reported that zoo head Takashi Yasunaga said the number of monkeys Punch got along with was increasing and that Punch seldom relied on the plush toy. Around Punch’s first birthday in July 2026, the Associated Press reported that he was mingling and playing with other monkeys.
