Tesla lists improvements to cabin insulation, suspension, features and aerodynamics; an independent 2026-model test found the car still extraordinarily quick, while its reviewer criticized steering feel and ride composure. The refresh looks like a refinement of the Plaid, not a new performance generation.
What changed in the 2025 Model S Plaid?
Tesla’s refresh covers both the standard Model S and Plaid. The company says it improved wind- and road-noise insulation, active noise cancelling, insulation and chassis materials, and ride comfort. It also lists revised air suspension, new wheel designs and low-resistance tires, plus dynamic ambient lighting, a front fascia camera, a blind-spot indicator and adaptive headlights.
Plaid-specific changes focus on airflow and high-speed behavior: revised front and rear fascias, a front splitter, a carbon-fiber spoiler, an updated diffuser, drive-unit refinements including carbon-wrapped rotors, and additional stabilization components. Tesla’s stated list describes what changed, but it does not quantify how much quieter, more comfortable or more stable the car became. Tesla’s Model S and Model X refresh article, published June 12, 2025 and updated January 22, 2026, says: “We continuously take customer feedback to improve our vehicles – even incorporating improvements between major refresh cycles.”
What the update is intended to improve
- Cabin comfort: insulation and active noise cancelling target wind and road noise.
- Ride and handling: revised suspension and chassis components are intended to improve comfort and stability.
- Everyday visibility and equipment: the fascia camera, blind-spot indicator, adaptive headlights and ambient lighting add features.
- Plaid aerodynamics: the revised bodywork and spoiler address airflow, while the drive-unit and stabilization changes target high-speed use.
How quick is the updated Plaid?
Tesla’s current U.S. Model S product page lists 1,020 hp, a 1.99-second 0–60 mph time and a 9.23-second quarter mile at 155 mph. These are manufacturer-published figures, not results from the independent test below. Tesla also lists a 200 mph top speed, but says reaching it requires a paid hardware upgrade; without that upgrade, the listed maximum is 163 mph.

Car and Driver’s instrumented test of a 2026 Model S Plaid, published October 21, 2025, recorded 2.1 seconds to 60 mph, 4.3 seconds to 100 mph and a 9.4-second quarter mile at 151 mph. The figures use different sources and methods, so they should not be treated as a direct discrepancy or as proof that the refresh improved acceleration. The publication characterized the 2026 car’s powertrain as essentially the same as the 2021 Plaid’s. Its test shows the familiar, formidable straight-line performance remains, rather than establishing a new benchmark attributable to the refresh. Car and Driver’s 2026 test
What range should you expect?
Tesla lists an EPA-estimated 368 miles for the Plaid on its U.S. product page. Car and Driver notes that this estimate corresponds to the 19-inch-wheel configuration; the publication gives 309 miles for the 21-inch setup. In its own 75-mph highway test, the 21-inch-wheel car covered 300 miles. That result is a road-test measurement under the publication’s test conditions, not an EPA rating.

- Collectible Die-Cast Metal Vehicle: 1:64 Scale die-cast metal construction recommended for ages 3 and above
- Authentic Tesla Model S Plaid Replica: Features detailed design of the high-performance electric vehicle in vibrant red color
- HW EV Series Collection: Part of the Hot Wheels Electric Vehicle series, numbered 1/10 in the HW EV lineup
- Limited Edition Release: Collectible item numbered 9 out of 250 in this special production series
- Premium Hot Wheels Quality: Durable construction with authentic details and smooth rolling wheels for racing and display
Wheel size and test method matter when comparing these numbers. The 368-mile estimate is not the appropriate figure to apply to the 21-inch configuration, and the 300-mile highway result should not be substituted for an EPA estimate.
Does the refresh make it better to drive?
Tesla’s changes point to quieter cruising, a more comfortable ride and improved high-speed stability, but the available independent test did not compare a pre-refresh and refreshed car under matched conditions or isolate each change. It therefore cannot establish the size of those improvements.

Car and Driver’s reviewer described the cabin experience as calm, but said steering feel lacked confidence and ride composure was not exceptional. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not a universal verdict. They also show why the refresh cannot fairly be called better in every way on the evidence available: Tesla lists concrete revisions, while at least one independent assessment still found shortcomings in two everyday driving qualities.

Tesla says Plaid Track Mode lets drivers adjust stability controls, handling balance and regenerative braking. It also says the Model S set production-EV Nürburgring lap records in 2021 and 2023 with an upgraded Track Package. These are Tesla’s claims; the sources cited here do not independently verify the records or establish that the 2025 changes produced them.

Verdict: a more polished Plaid, not a wholesale reinvention
The update is substantial in the areas Tesla targeted: comfort, cabin equipment, suspension, aerodynamics and high-speed chassis hardware. The Plaid’s headline acceleration remains exceptional, but the independent test presents it as familiar rather than transformed. “Better in every way” is therefore best read as an enthusiastic description of Tesla’s aims, not a conclusion established by a matched independent comparison. Buyers weighing the refresh should distinguish Tesla’s feature and engineering claims from measured performance and reviewer impressions.
