What did Jodie Foster say to Robert Downey Jr.?
Foster recalled telling Downey: “But I’m scared of what happens to you next. Right now you are incredibly good at balancing on the barstool. But it’s really precarious, and I’m not sure how that’s going to end.” The quotation appeared in Ryan D’Agostino’s Esquire profile, published April 8, 2024: “Robert Downey Jr. Doesn’t See Things the Way You Do”.
Why was Foster worried?
Foster’s comment conveyed her concern about Downey’s precarious circumstances at the time. In the same profile, she described him as exceptionally creative but said he lacked discipline then: “What was so interesting about him then was what a genius he was—there was more creativity in his little finger than I will ever have in my whole life—but he did not have the discipline.” These are Foster’s retrospective impressions, not a clinical assessment.
What were they working on?
The conversation took place during production of Home for the Holidays, the 1995 film Foster directed and Downey acted in. The Independent’s April 9, 2024 report also identifies the film and summarizes Foster’s recollection: “Jodie Foster told Robert Downey Jr she was ‘scared’ for him during addiction”.
