Jimmy Kimmel criticized President Donald Trump for turning a reporter’s question about Charlie Kirk’s killing into a discussion of White House ballroom construction. Kimmel said that was not how an adult grieves someone he had called a friend. Those remarks were distinct from Kimmel’s separate criticism of people he said were trying to define Kirk’s alleged killer as outside the MAGA movement and score political points.
What Kimmel said about Trump’s response
After Kirk was killed, a reporter asked Trump how he was doing. Trump turned to discussing construction of a White House ballroom. In his September 15, 2025 monologue, Kimmel mocked that response, saying it was not how an adult grieves someone he called a friend. ABC’s account of Kimmel’s return and the contemporaneous account by House Democrats describe the exchange and his criticism. ABC News’ return report | September 18 House Democrats’ letter
His separate remarks about the alleged killer
Kimmel’s monologue also addressed reactions to Kirk’s killing. He said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA Gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” The House Democrats’ letter says Kimmel also criticized Trump for blaming Democrats rather than bringing the country together; that is the letter’s description of the monologue.
Kimmel’s wording was his characterization of the political response, not proof of the alleged killer’s political identity. On September 11, Kimmel had condemned the shooting and sent love to the Kirk family, according to the letter, which cites his Instagram post.

Why the show was preempted—and when it returned
Brendan Carr, then chair of the Federal Communications Commission, discussed potential FCC action in a September 17, 2025 podcast appearance. As quoted in the House Democrats’ letter, Carr said broadcasters could “take action, frankly, on Kimmel,” or there would be “additional work for the FCC ahead.” ABC announced that day that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be preempted indefinitely. The sequence and public statements are documented; these sources do not establish a definitive legal judgment or prove a causal chain. The House Democrats’ letter calls Carr’s comments threats, while ABC reported that Carr suggested suspension and said the FCC would have remedies. The FCC did not, according to these accounts, order the show’s removal.
Disney later said it suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation and considered some comments ill-timed and insensitive. ABC affiliate station groups Nexstar and Sinclair also preempted the program, so local availability differed during the dispute. Their carriage decisions were separate from ABC’s network announcement.

What Kimmel said when he returned
On September 23, Kimmel said, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.” He also said he did not think the person who shot Kirk represented anyone, describing the alleged killer as a sick person who believed violence was a solution. He said he had not intended to assign blame to a specific group.
Disney’s statement on the return described the suspension as a decision made “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” adding that it felt some comments were ill-timed and therefore insensitive. ABC News reported the statement and return remarks.

What the record does—and does not—establish
The available accounts establish what Kimmel said, ABC’s announcement, Carr’s public comments, and the later return and affiliate restoration. They do not settle whether the FCC’s conduct amounted to unlawful pressure, whether constitutional rights were violated, or what motivated each broadcaster’s decision. The congressional letter argues that government pressure was involved, but it is an advocacy document by Democratic members of Congress; its legal and causal claims should be understood as their position, not as adjudicated findings.
At the time of ABC’s September 2025 report, viewers could also find the program through services including Hulu + Live TV, with next-day episodes on Hulu and Disney+ and clips on the show’s YouTube page.
