His remarks also drew on the recent suspension and return of his late-night show, making free expression a central theme of the address.
What Kimmel said about Trump
The Associated Press reported several sharp lines from Kimmel’s Christmas Day address, including: “From a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year” and “Tyranny is booming over here.” He also said: “We won, the president lost, and now I’m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on earth a right and richly deserved bollocking.”
These are selected excerpts reported by the AP, not a complete independently verified transcript. They convey the address’s confrontational tone, but should not be taken as a full account of everything Kimmel said.
Why Kimmel delivered the UK address
Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message is a counterpoint to the British monarch’s annual televised Christmas address. The AP dates the Channel 4 tradition to 1993. For its 2025 message, the channel chose an American late-night host whose recent clash with Trump had put freedom of expression at the center of his public story.

In advance coverage, a Channel 4 spokesperson said Trump’s return to the White House and his wide-ranging impact made 2025 a fitting subject for Kimmel, whom the channel described as being on the frontline of America’s free-speech battle. The Guardian reported that the address was scheduled for 5:45 p.m. UK time on Christmas Day, less than two hours after the King’s message; that was the reported schedule, not confirmation of the precise time it began.
How the suspension of Kimmel’s show shaped the speech
According to the AP, ABC indefinitely suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025 after criticism of Kimmel’s remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The show returned less than a week later.

In a first-person essay published on Christmas Day, Kimmel presented public support for the show’s return as support for freedom of expression and urged people in Britain not to give up on the United States. Those are Kimmel’s interpretations and appeal, rather than a neutral finding by Channel 4 or a court. The Guardian’s advance report also quoted him saying Americans should tell people abroad that many were not okay with what was happening, while insisting that there remained more good than bad in the country.
