What Jennifer Did is a Netflix documentary about the 2010 shooting at the Pan family home in Markham, Ontario, and the investigation that followed Jennifer Pan’s report of a home invasion. The film was released on April 10, 2024, and directed by Jenny Popplewell. Its account is not the final word on the case: in 2025, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld attempted-murder convictions but ordered a new trial on the first-degree murder count.

What is What Jennifer Did about?

Netflix describes the film as an examination of the attack and the investigation, using police interrogation footage and testimony from people involved. Its synopsis says those materials “unravel a web of complexities that no one saw coming.” That is Netflix’s description of the documentary’s approach, not a court finding. Netflix Media Center identifies it as a 2024 feature documentary directed by Jenny Popplewell, with a stated U.S. release date of April 10, 2024, and the United Kingdom as its country of origin. Netflix catalogs can vary by region.

The documentary revisits the November 8, 2010, attack at the Pan family home in Markham, Ontario. Netflix’s account says Jennifer Pan called 911 to report that armed intruders had entered the home, tied her up and shot her parents. Her mother, Bich Ha Pan, died; her father, Huei Hann Pan, survived serious injuries. The film follows investigators’ scrutiny of Jennifer’s account and her role in the events, including what Netflix describes as a murder-for-hire plot. These are details of the documentary’s narrative; the later court ruling supplies the clearest update to the case’s legal status. Netflix Tudum’s account of the case

What did Jennifer Pan do?

Jennifer Pan initially told police that intruders had attacked her family. She was later prosecuted alongside Daniel Wong, Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam for the murder of her mother and attempted murder of her father. A jury convicted the four on both counts. In 2025, however, the Supreme Court of Canada confirmed the attempted-murder convictions and ordered a new trial on the first-degree murder count. The original first-degree murder conviction should therefore not be described as the final disposition. Supreme Court of Canada, R. v. Pan, Case in Brief

I Know What You Did Last Summer
  • When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they?re forced to confront the truth: someone knows what they did last summer?and is hell-bent on revenge. As they are stalked by a killer, they turn to survivors of the legendary 1997 Southport Massacre for help.

What changed in the 2025 Supreme Court ruling?

In R. v. Pan, 2025 SCC 12, dated April 10, 2025, the Supreme Court held that the jury should have been allowed to consider included offences on the first-degree murder count. It confirmed the attempted-murder convictions and affirmed an order for a new trial on the murder count. The Court summarized its result this way: “The Supreme Court has confirmed attempted murder convictions and an order for a new trial in the high profile shooting of an Ontario couple in their home.”

The official court material cited here establishes that order, but not whether a retrial later took place or how it ended. The documentary, released in 2024, predates the Supreme Court’s decision and cannot reflect that subsequent legal development.

How does the documentary relate to other accounts?

The film is an edited documentary built around interrogation footage and testimony, rather than a complete court record. TIME reports that it draws heavily on material crime reporter Jeremy Grimaldi used for his 2016 book, A Daughter’s Deadly Deception: The Jennifer Pan Story. Viewers looking for the later procedural outcome should read the Supreme Court’s Case in Brief alongside the film; the two serve different purposes.
