Her “Jamie Bond” line was a hypothetical example, not a project announcement or a call to cast a woman as James Bond.
What did Jenna Ortega say?
During an MTV interview while promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, host Josh Horowitz asked Ortega and co-star Catherine O’Hara about a hypothetical gender-flipped sequel to Edward Scissorhands, with Ortega playing a character jokingly called “Edith Scissorhands.” TheWrap reported Ortega’s response: “I love that there’s a lot more female leads nowadays, I think that’s so special, but we should have our own.” She added that she did not want a spin-off “like ‘Jamie Bond’” and wanted to see “another badass.” TheWrap’s September 3, 2024 report attributes the quotation to the MTV interview.

Rolling Stone Australia and Complex also reported the exchange and Ortega’s preference for original female-led stories. The comments were made in a promotional interview, not as an announcement about a film in development. Rolling Stone Australia published its account on September 4, 2024; Complex reported on September 3, 2024.
Was Ortega advocating female leads in spin-offs?
Not in the sense implied by the title. She welcomed more female leads, then distinguished that progress from making a woman the gender-flipped lead of an existing male-led property. Her preference, as reported by the outlets, was for women to have original characters and stories of their own.

“Jamie Bond” was an illustrative hypothetical. The cited coverage does not report a real James Bond spin-off by that name, nor does it establish that Ortega opposed every sequel, remake, franchise, or woman taking over an existing role. Her comments express a creative preference, not a universal rule about casting or adaptation.
How does the Edward Scissorhands question fit?
The “Edith Scissorhands” idea was Horowitz’s hypothetical prompt, not a proposed production. In the same interview, Ortega discussed the distinct stories and worlds of Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice; Rolling Stone Australia reported that she floated possibilities such as an anthology or moving a story into the future. That broader discussion should not be confused with her specific objection to a gender-flipped “Jamie Bond”-style spin-off.

What did Barbara Broccoli say?
Rolling Stone Australia also cited Bond producer Barbara Broccoli’s separate support for creating roles for women rather than simply having women play men’s roles. The outlet quoted Broccoli as saying, “I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles.” It also attributed to Broccoli a statement from a 2021 Hollywood Reporter interview that there were not enough great roles for women and that she wanted films made for women about women. These are Broccoli’s views, not Ortega’s.
