Jason and Erica Redman credit candid communication, humor, teamwork, support for each other’s individual goals, and a lasting friendship with helping their marriage endure demanding military service and major life changes. Their account is personal experience, not a formula or guarantee for other couples.
What the Redmans say helped them stay together
In a March 12, 2025 interview with PEOPLE, syndicated by AOL, the couple described several habits they believe helped sustain their relationship. At the time, they had been married nearly 24 years and had three adult children.
They were candid about the demands of military life
Jason said he warned Erica early in their relationship that his service would involve frequent absences, danger, missed holidays, and periods when he could not tell her where he was. He jokingly told her she should “run,” a line they say became a recurring joke. The exchange reflects their way of talking about the strain; it does not suggest those pressures were easy.
They used humor and communication
The couple credit open communication and humor with helping them through difficult stretches. Their interview presents these as practices that worked for them, not as a counseling method or a substitute for professional support when a couple needs it.

They treated the relationship as a team
Jason put one part of his outlook plainly: “Your spouse should be your most important teammate.” He also said partners should make room for one another’s goals and dreams. In his telling, commitment to the partnership and individual aspirations can coexist.
They made room for change
Jason said both he and Erica changed as they matured, while their friendship and love remained constant. The couple also did not portray their marriage as perfect; their advice comes from the particular life they shared.

The experiences behind their advice
The PEOPLE interview describes a marriage shaped by long absences and the risks of Jason’s military service. It reports that he was struck by machine-gun fire in Fallujah in 2007, shot seven times in the face and arms, and underwent upwards of 30 surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The article says he retired in 2013 after 21 years of service. These are biographical details as reported in the interview, not independently verified here.
The scale of those experiences helps explain why the Redmans emphasize honesty, mutual support, and humor. It does not establish that their approach is superior to other couples’ choices or that the same habits will produce the same outcome elsewhere.
