The red trunks, the relaxed silhouette and the Kingdom Come-inspired shield all support that approach, according to the actor and costume designer Judianna Makovsky. Their explanations reveal the creative intent behind the look—not a guaranteed response from every viewer.
Why does David Corenswet’s Superman wear red trunks?
Corenswet’s answer is about both silhouette and character. Without the trunks, he said, the blue suit can look military; the red breaks up that impression. He also said the color stands out against a blue sky and suggests Superman is not overly concerned with looking cool.
“Without the trunks, the uniform can look very military.”
Corenswet described the character’s attitude this way: “He’s not trying to look cool.” In that reading, the trunks are not simply a retro flourish. They help keep the costume from feeling severe and make its wearer seem more approachable. That is the actor’s interpretation of the design, not evidence that every audience member will read it identically.

How the costume balances a uniform with a human silhouette
Costume designer Judianna Makovsky said the team wanted the suit to read as clothing rather than a sculpted superhero body. “Well, the one thing we didn’t want was a sculpted fake body,” she said in production notes published by The Credits, the Motion Picture Association’s platform. The aim was a uniform Superman puts on to do a job, not a costume that announces artificial muscles.
That choice fits with Corenswet’s explanation of the trunks: both the construction and the color help steer away from a purely militaristic or imposing look. The reported intention is a Superman who appears ready to work while remaining recognizable as the classic character.

What the S-shield draws from
Makovsky said the shield was based on the emblem in DC’s Kingdom Come, with a slight adjustment. “James was very clear from the beginning which S-Shield he wanted to use, and it actually came from DC, from Kingdom Come.” The choice gives the suit a specific comic-book reference; it does not establish that the film adapts that story.
How James Gunn decided whether to keep the trunks
The final look was not automatic. Gunn said the team tried versions with and without trunks on Corenswet, and that he initially leaned toward leaving them off. He consulted Zack Snyder, who had tested many trunk variations for his own Superman film, before Gunn chose the classic look.

“One of the biggest questions was, were we going to have trunks, or were we going to not have trunks?”
The process makes the design decision legible: the trunks were considered against an alternative, not included by default. Corenswet’s explanation gives the choice its visual and tonal rationale, while Gunn’s account shows that the filmmakers tested the look before settling on it.

What the first look and comic recommendations establish
DC released the first-look image on May 6, 2024. It showed Corenswet pulling on his boots and made clear that the red trunks were returning. DC also reported that Gunn recommended All-Star Superman to Corenswet. That makes the comic useful context for the actor’s preparation, but it is not evidence that the 2025 film directly adapts it.
Taken together, the creators’ comments point to a costume built around recognizable comic-book imagery without turning Superman into a rigid, armored figure: the trunks soften the uniform’s military impression, the suit avoids fake sculpted muscles, and the shield nods to Kingdom Come.
