The exchange is Albrecht’s retrospective recollection, relayed in the 2024 documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos—not a contemporaneous transcript. Gandolfini went on to lead The Sopranos through all six seasons.
What happened at the intervention
Albrecht said he arranged the meeting at his New York apartment. He told Gandolfini they would talk through tensions and clear the air, but the gathering’s purpose was to encourage the actor to enter a rehabilitation facility. According to Albrecht, Gandolfini arrived and saw his sisters and several castmates among those assembled. He swore, walked out, and told Albrecht, “Fire me.” The Independent’s September 8, 2024 report recounts Albrecht’s account.
Salon’s September 9, 2024 report describes the intervention as an effort to help Gandolfini with substance-abuse issues. The precise wording of the expletive varies in the outlets’ censored renderings, so it should not be treated as a verified verbatim transcript.
Who said “Fire me,” and how reliable is the quote?
Chris Albrecht, then a former HBO CEO, is the source of the anecdote. He recalled Gandolfini’s words in Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos, and news reports relayed that account. The concise quote repeated by the reports is “Fire me.” The available accounts do not establish the intervention’s exact date or provide contemporaneous documentation of the exchange.

Did Gandolfini leave The Sopranos?
No. The reported outburst did not mark his departure from the series. Gandolfini continued as its lead through all six seasons, which aired from 1999 to 2007, according to The Independent. Vanity Fair’s 2012 oral history dates the show’s debut to January 10, 1999.

Castmate Steven Van Zandt separately recalled that Gandolfini often said he was done and did not want to return to work. Van Zandt said he reminded him that a hundred people depended on the production. This, too, is a retrospective recollection, not evidence that Gandolfini formally left the show; the series continued with him in the lead role.
