Randy Taraborrelli’s JFK: Public, Private, Secret presents Joan Lundberg as a significant relationship in John F. Kennedy’s life and places their reported meeting in 1956, amid difficulties in Kennedy’s marriage to Jacqueline. Those are the biographer’s account and interpretation—not independently verified conclusions established by the sources available here.
Who was Joan Lundberg?
A secondary NewsNation report republished by AllSides describes Lundberg as a flight attendant and says the biography reports that she met Kennedy in 1956, when he was a Massachusetts senator and married to Jacqueline Kennedy. The available report excerpt does not provide the full article, so these details should be understood as that report’s account of the book.

What does the biography say about the relationship?
Taraborrelli discusses Lundberg in a History Hit interview. He situates the relationship in the period after Jacqueline Kennedy’s stillbirth in 1956 and amid the family tensions that followed. His account frames Lundberg as a woman Kennedy turned to during a difficult stretch in his marriage. The book’s framing is a biographer’s interpretation of the material he consulted; the sources cited here do not independently establish every detail or the precise timeline of the relationship.
What sources are said to support the account?
Landmark Booksellers describes Taraborrelli’s biography as drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted over 25 years, along with oral histories at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Secret Service reports, National Archives files, and CIA and FBI documents. This is the retailer’s description of the book’s research, not an independent audit of those materials.

The AllSides-republished NewsNation report further says Lundberg’s son, Zachary Hitchcock, shared her unpublished memoir and diaries with Taraborrelli. That claim is reported secondhand here: the available excerpt does not provide the materials themselves or enough detail to assess their provenance, contents, or how they were corroborated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and can’t—be concluded from these reports?
The available sources establish what Taraborrelli’s book and interview say about Lundberg, and what a secondary report says about the materials reportedly supplied to him. They do not let a reader independently verify the diaries or memoir, compare them with contemporaneous records, or confirm every detail of the relationship. For those questions, the full book and its notes would need to be assessed alongside the underlying records where available.
See the Landmark Booksellers listing for JFK: Public, Private, Secret. Taraborrelli’s account of Lundberg is discussed in History Hit’s interview, “John F. Kennedy: Myths vs Reality”, dated November 24, 2025. The secondary report is available at AllSides, “JFK biography reveals what Jackie Kennedy knew about affair: Report”, dated September 25, 2025.
