IT: Welcome to Derry has an opportunity the two It films did not: more episodes in which to explore Stephen King’s larger world of Derry. That is a promising distinction, not proof that the series fixes anything the movies got wrong. HBO describes the show as based on King’s novel while expanding the vision established by Andy Muschietti’s films; the available official material does not identify specific book passages the films mishandled or confirm how the series adapts them.
What does Welcome to Derry add to the It movies?
It adds a series-length framework for returning to Derry and developing a story beyond the two feature films’ scope. HBO describes IT: Welcome to Derry as based on King’s It and as expanding the vision of Muschietti’s IT and IT Chapter Two. HBO announced an eight-episode season in 2025, originally scheduled to premiere October 26 and conclude December 14. Those are the announced rollout dates, not a statement of present-day availability.
The format creates room to spend more time with the town and its history than a pair of films can. But room is not evidence of what the finished series actually does: the official descriptions cited here do not establish particular events, characters or novel passages that the show restores or develops.
Is the series based on the book or the movies?
Officially, it is connected to both. HBO says the series is based on King’s novel and expands the vision established by Muschietti’s two films. That makes it neither a wholly independent adaptation nor simply a claim to reproduce the novel unchanged. The premise combines a relationship to the book with continuity from the film world.

Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who developed the series, described the novel as “an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our ‘IT’ movies.” They also said they wanted to share its “heart, humor, humanity and horror.” These statements explain the creators’ ambitions; they are not an independent verdict on the films or proof that the series achieves every part of that ambition.
What did the It movies leave out of the book?
The reliable answer from the official material is that the filmmakers believed the novel contained more than they could explore in their movies. The sources do not provide a scene-by-scene comparison or identify specific omissions, so it would be premature to say that the series is restoring a particular character, episode or theme. A claim that the movies “butchered” an element needs an example: what King wrote, how the films changed or omitted it, and how the series handles it.

That distinction matters because adaptation is selective by design. A feature film and an episodic series have different amounts of screen time, and a change is not automatically a failure. The strongest case for the series is therefore about opportunity and scope until specific comparisons can support a stronger judgment.
Who is making the series?
HBO credits Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs as developers. In its 2025 press release, HBO identified Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane as co-showrunners and said Fuchs wrote the first episode’s teleplay. The creative team’s connection to the films helps explain the series’ relationship to that screen version, while the stated aim to draw on the novel points to a wider source-material ambition.

How to compare the book, films and series
Rather than treating “better” or “butchered” as settled conclusions, compare the versions on distinct grounds:
- Source relationship: Identify what derives from King’s novel and what carries forward the films’ continuity.
- Scope: Compare what two feature films can develop with what an eight-episode season has time to explore.
- Derry and its people: Check the novel and each screen version before claiming that a specific person, event or part of the town’s history was omitted or restored.
- Tone and themes: Assess how each version balances horror, humor, humanity and community; the filmmakers’ stated intent alone does not establish the audience’s experience.
Should you read Stephen King’s It first?
Reading the novel is a useful way to make your own comparison with the films and series. The Muschiettis’ account of its breadth and HBO’s description of the show’s connection to the book make the novel a relevant companion, but you do not need to treat it as a test of whether an adaptation is faithful. For the clearest comparison, notice which material each screen version selects and what its format allows it to develop.
