It is often discussed on the asexual spectrum, but people use the label in different ways; it is a description, not a test or a rule for how someone must date.
What does fraysexual mean?
Fraysexuality is a sexual-attraction pattern associated with unfamiliarity or the absence of a deep emotional bond. Someone may feel sexual attraction early on and notice that it diminishes as they get to know the person or become emotionally close. Psychosexual and relationship psychotherapist Silva Neves describes this pattern in Psychology Today (June 8, 2026); the Oxford University LGBTQ+ Society glossary likewise describes attraction that is initially present and fades after getting to know someone.
People may emphasize different parts of the experience: attraction to people who are unfamiliar, or attraction that changes as an emotional bond develops. There is no single definition that acts as a universal test. The UCSF LGBTQIA+ Resource Center glossary notes that identity terms and definitions evolve and are not definitive; a person may also use more than one label.
How is fraysexuality different from demisexuality?
Demisexuality is commonly used for a pattern in which sexual attraction emerges only after a close emotional bond forms. Fraysexuality is often used for a contrasting pattern: attraction may be present before a close bond and lessen as familiarity or intimacy develops. This comparison can help describe an experience, but it is not a strict either-or classification. People’s experiences may not fit a simple contrast.

How is fraysexuality different from frayromanticism?
Fraysexuality concerns sexual attraction. Frayromanticism concerns romantic attraction that fades as someone becomes more familiar. The terms describe different kinds of attraction, so one does not automatically imply the other. The Oxford University LGBTQ+ Society definitions distinguish the two.
Does being fraysexual mean someone cannot have a relationship?
No. An attraction pattern does not determine whether someone dates, has sex, commits, or chooses a particular relationship structure. Fraysexual people can have stable and meaningful romantic relationships, including relationships with little or no sex. Neves emphasizes communication and mutual understanding between partners, and writes: “A reduction in sexual desire does not automatically equate to a lack of depth, importance or meaning in a romantic relationship.”

For partners, useful conversations can focus on what each person experiences, wants, and consents to, rather than treating a label as a promise about future desire. Attraction, sexual activity, romantic attachment, and commitment are related for some people but are not interchangeable.
How can someone tell whether the label fits?
A label may be useful if it gives someone language for a recurring pattern, but it is optional. A question Neves offers in the June 8, 2026 Psychology Today article is: “Do you have strong sexual desire for people you don’t know, but as soon as a romantic relationship is established, you lose your sexual desire for that person?” It can prompt reflection, but it is not a diagnostic test. No one needs to prove an identity or adopt a label to make their experience valid.

People may understand their attraction differently over time, and a label can be revised or set aside. The UCSF glossary notes that orientation can be fluid and that people may use multiple labels.

The sources cited here do not establish a reliable prevalence figure for fraysexuality. They also do not establish a well-supported date when the term was coined. A glossary entry’s publication or modification date records that entry’s history, not necessarily the term’s origin. It is more accurate to describe the pattern without assigning it an unsupported statistic or origin story.
