The “snowflake generation” is a pejorative, informal label for young people stereotyped as too easily upset or offended. It has no agreed birth-year range, and the phrase expresses a judgment about young people rather than an established finding about an entire generation.

What does “snowflake generation” mean?

Cambridge English Dictionary defines the phrase as “a way of referring to the type of young people who are considered by some people to be too easily upset and offended.” Its wording matters: “considered by some people” signals that this is a perception, not a neutral description of a verified group trait. Cambridge marks the expression informal and disapproving. Cambridge English Dictionary

Collins English Dictionary describes it as a generation viewed as less resilient and more prone to taking offence than previous generations. Collins labels the term informal and derogatory. That definition, too, describes the stereotype attached to the phrase—not proof that young people share those characteristics. Collins English Dictionary

Who does the label refer to?

There is no consistent age definition. Collins frames the group as people who became adults in or after the 2010s, while Wiktionary records a usage associated with people born in the 1980s and 1990s. These descriptions differ and do not establish an agreed cohort or formal demographic category. Collins English Dictionary Wiktionary

So when someone uses the phrase, the intended age group may depend on the speaker and context. It is more precise to call it a label or stereotype than to treat it as the name of a generation with a settled set of birth years.

Is it a neutral or factual description?

No. The major dictionary entries explicitly mark the expression as disapproving or derogatory. In neutral writing, use wording such as “the so-called snowflake generation” or “the stereotype that young people are unusually sensitive,” rather than adopting the label as a factual characterization.

Claims that a generation is less resilient or more easily offended should be distinguished from evidence about individuals or age groups. The dictionary definitions describe how the group is viewed; they do not demonstrate that the stereotype is true. The sources reviewed here do not identify a statistic or demographic study establishing that an entire generation is less resilient.

How does the phrase appear in debates about education?

The term is sometimes used in arguments about teaching difficult material and trigger warnings. A 2019 Time essay discusses the phrase in that context, illustrating the debate rather than establishing a generational trait. Time

In that kind of discussion, it helps to separate the underlying question—how educators should approach potentially distressing material—from the broad insult implied by the label. Using the phrase alone does not settle whether a particular teaching practice is useful or whether a particular student is resilient.
