Zorse was a New York Times Games phrase-guessing puzzle that entered beta testing on October 8, 2024. Each puzzle combined two phrases, and the initial test was limited to players in Canada. The announcement establishes that historical test—not whether Zorse is playable today.
What was Zorse?
Zorse was a beta puzzle from The New York Times Games built around combining phrases. The company described it as a “phrase guessing game where every puzzle is a mash-up of two phrases,” according to Semafor’s October 8, 2024 report. A same-day TechCrunch summary likewise described the game as a beta featuring puzzles that mash up two phrases.
The available announcement coverage does not explain the precise rules, scoring, or how players entered their guesses. It supports the basic mechanic, but not a more detailed walkthrough of play.
When and where was the beta announced?
Semafor reported that testing would begin October 8, 2024, initially for players in Canada. That geographic limit describes the announced beta; it does not establish where the game may have been available later.

What did the Times say the beta was for?
The company said it hoped to learn how players engaged with Zorse and to hear their feedback, comparing the process with how it handled other games in beta. The statement presents Zorse as a test intended to gather player response, not as confirmation of a full release.
Is Zorse available now?
The cited announcement and its same-day summary do not verify Zorse’s availability in October 2026. They also do not establish that it was discontinued. Its current status is therefore unresolved; the 2024 beta announcement alone is not evidence that readers can play it now.

- Revealing the assassin ends the game instantly, adding high-stakes tension
- Teams may guess up to the clue number plus one, allowing strategic risks or revisiting old clues
How did Zorse fit into NYT Games?
The beta arrived amid substantial engagement with the broader NYT Games portfolio. Semafor reported figures attributed to The New York Times: more than 10 million Games app downloads in 2023, and more than 8 billion puzzle plays, including 4.8 billion Wordle plays and 2.3 billion Connections plays. The report also cited more than 120 million Spelling Bee Genius-level achievements. These are figures reported in 2024 about the broader Games offering; they do not measure Zorse’s audience or current activity.
Semafor described subscriptions and advertising as ways the broader Games business was monetized. That context does not establish that Zorse itself was a paid product.
