It is available as a standalone iOS and Android app, requires a New York Times account, and is free to play whether or not you subscribe.
What is Crossplay?
Crossplay is a turn-based word game from NYT Games. Players build words by placing letter tiles on a shared board, taking turns against another person or the computer. It is Scrabble-like, but it is not the official Scrabble app; the Associated Press reports that Crossplay differs from Scrabble in board design and some letter values. The available sources do not establish a complete rules comparison.
How to play Crossplay
The central loop is to make a word from tiles on your turn, using the shared board as play develops. The game also lets a player swap tiles or pass. Crossplay is asynchronous rather than requiring both players to be online together: each player has seven days to take a turn. If a player misses that window, the game times out and counts as an automatic resignation, according to the NYT Games help page.
Where to play and who can you play with?
Crossplay is a standalone app for iOS and Android, listed in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You need a New York Times account to play, but not a paid subscription.

You can invite friends, use matchmaking to find a human opponent, or play against the computer. NYT says matchmaking takes performance level, recent activity, and other components into account; that does not mean every matchup is guaranteed to be evenly balanced. The app also supports multiple simultaneous games, profiles, stats, and chat. The help page explains that friend invitations can use links or QR codes, and that players can adjust contact discovery. Chat can be turned off, and players can mute, block, remove, or report another player.
Is Crossplay free?
Yes. NYT’s help page says Crossplay is free to play regardless of subscription status. One related feature has different access rules: Cross Bot Game Review summarizes a completed player-versus-player game and highlights four to five plays as learning opportunities. Subscribers with eligible Games access receive the feature, while registered users have limited access. Check the current help page for up-to-date eligibility details.

How Crossplay compares with Scrabble
The useful shorthand is “Scrabble-like”: both are word-building games played with letter tiles, but the AP’s launch coverage notes differences in board design and some letter values. That supports a broad comparison, not a claim that the games share identical rules. Current official rule details sufficient to compare tile distributions, accepted words, scoring, or endgame conditions are not established here, so those specifics should not be assumed.
