Her blonde hair in Elf was dyed for a role, not her natural shade.
Zooey Deschanel’s natural hair color
Deschanel described her natural hair as dark brown in an interview quoted by Us Weekly: “My hair is naturally dark brown.” She pointed to her family’s hair colors as well: “If you look at my family, my dad has dark brown hair. My mom has dark brown hair. My sister [Emily Deschanel] has brown hair. All signs point to brown hair.”
Why she was blonde in Elf
Deschanel’s blonde look began with a screen test for an earlier pop-star movie that was ultimately not made. For that test, her hair was dyed blonde and extensions were added; she kept the look when she auditioned for Elf, according to a Parade report on her 2026 appearance on the Zach Sang Show. Deschanel recalled, “They dyed my hair blonde and they put these extensions in, they gave me a tan, a whole thing,” adding, “It was really random.”
How she felt about returning to brown
In a 2012 interview with Allure, Deschanel said blonde hair felt unfamiliar: “I would literally wake up and see blonde hair in front of my face and I’d be like, Who am I?!” She also recalled her sister’s reaction when she went back to brown: “Thank God you’re back.”
