Weapons is a 2025 horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger. In Maybrook, Pennsylvania, 17 children from one teacher’s class leave their homes at 2:17 a.m. and disappear. Alex is the only student from the class who remains. The film follows several people drawn into the mystery, shifting its focus among them as the disappearance unsettles the town.
What happens in Weapons?
The central mystery begins with the disappearance of 17 children from Ms. Justine Gandy’s class. The children leave their homes at the same time, 2:17 a.m.; Alex is the lone student from the class who does not vanish. That premise sets up an ensemble story about the people left to confront the event, rather than a mystery told only through one person’s experience. Who are the main characters in Weapons?
The cast’s central characters approach the mystery from different positions: at the school, in a missing child’s family, in local law enforcement, and on the town’s margins.
Justine Gandy — Julia Garner
Justine is the teacher whose class is at the center of the disappearance. Garner describes her as deeply invested in teaching and struggling with alcohol use. As parents look for answers, suspicion falls on Justine.

Archer is a father whose son disappears. Brolin characterizes him as initially emotionally contained, then increasingly driven by the search and consumed by fear and frustration.
Paul Morgan — Alden Ehrenreich
Paul is a local police officer with a history involving Justine. Ehrenreich describes him as a complicated person under pressure from the events.
James — Austin Abrams
James is a drifter and drug user. Abrams says the story becomes more frenetic when its attention turns to James.
Alex — Cary Christopher
Alex is the only student from Justine’s class who does not disappear, making him a key figure in the opening mystery.

Why does the film shift between characters?
Weapons gives several characters time in the foreground instead of following a single protagonist throughout. Those shifts let the story register different kinds of fear, suspicion, grief, and urgency as the same disappearance affects people across Maybrook. No one character’s viewpoint is presented as the whole account.
Cregger described the structure in Entertainment Weekly’s August 6, 2025 interview: “Weapons is structurally unique and it shifts a lot, but you always feel like you know where you are. It’s more about a gathering of momentum rather than a halt.” The design, in other words, is meant to keep changing the story’s focus while building forward momentum.

Where can you watch or buy Weapons?
Availability depends on region and format. Warner Bros. Discovery announced an HBO Max streaming debut for October 24, 2025; that dated announcement does not establish what is currently available in every country. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement is the source for that launch date.
For Japan, Warner Bros. Japan’s home-entertainment page lists digital purchase and rental from February 13, 2026, and a Blu-ray and DVD set dated March 18, 2026. These are Japanese release details, not dates for other markets. Check a local service or retailer for current availability and the exact edition offered.
