Creator Sooni Taraporevala describes its central idea as “independent young women standing their ground, being themselves and having fun.” Dance gives the ensemble a shared pursuit, while family expectations, caregiving, money and personal choices shape what each woman is trying to claim.
What is Waack Girls about?
The story follows Ishani, a dancer who forms and trains a waacking group with encouragement from talent manager Lopa. The troupe brings together women with different ambitions and pressures: Ishani worries about her ailing grandfather; Lopa is in conflict with her wealthy family; Tess deals with her mother’s gambling habit; Michke faces a demanding mother; Anumita would rather dance than pursue gymnastics; and fashion designer LP is under financial strain. These circumstances make the ensemble more than a team assembled to perform: their relationships and constraints are part of the story.
Taraporevala told Scroll that the series is about young women standing their ground. A contemporaneous review by Nandini Ramnath also identifies Lopa as openly lesbian and describes the women’s personal constraints as intersecting with the troupe’s story.
How did Sooni Taraporevala come up with the series?
Taraporevala said she began thinking about Waack Girls in 2020, after casting dancer Mekhola Bose in her earlier film Yeh Ballet. Bose’s dancing inspired the project, though Taraporevala said she initially did not know the dance style’s name. The first version of the story focused on Ishani, her grandfather, neighbour Manik and manager Lopa. Working with co-writers Iyanah Bativala and Ronny Sen, she developed it into a larger ensemble.

The creator has described waacking’s beginnings in Los Angeles gay clubs in the 1970s and 1980s, and said its potential for expression amid pain drew her interest. That is Taraporevala’s account of what attracted her to the dance form, rather than a comprehensive history of waacking.
How does dance connect the characters to the setting?
The series is set in Kolkata, a city Taraporevala said she loves. She told Scroll that it was shot on location except for two sequences. Her account of the production also emphasizes the challenge of casting dancers who could act; she named casting director Tess Joseph and choreographers Mekhola Bose, Yoonji Lee and Shiamak Davar.
