The Witcher: Blood Origin is a four-episode Netflix limited series that premiered on December 25, 2022. It is a prequel rather than a numbered season of The Witcher. Netflix sets it more than a thousand years before the main story, in an elven world, and follows seven outcasts. Its reception has been poor: a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot captured in 2026 showed a 29% critics score and a 13% audience score. Those numbers show how the show has been rated on that site. They do not, on their own, explain why viewers reacted the way they did.

What the series is

The show’s basic details are straightforward, but several of them come from different sources and carry different qualifications. The table below separates them.

Detail What is stated Source
Format Limited series, listed as a 2022 title Netflix official catalog page
Premiere December 25, 2022 Netflix Tudum release announcement
Episodes Four Netflix Tudum creator interview; Netflix catalog page
Creators Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich Netflix catalog page
Cast named in catalog Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, Michelle Yeoh Netflix catalog page
Setting An elven world more than a thousand years before The Witcher Netflix official synopsis
Setting, as TIME dates it Roughly 1,200 years before Geralt’s era TIME explainer (contemporary, independent)
Premise Seven outcasts; a familiar character, Jaskier, learns the story of Éile and her companions Netflix official synopsis; TIME explainer

The two setting figures are consistent with each other. Netflix uses the broader “more than a thousand years” phrasing, while TIME gives an approximate figure. Catalog details, including availability, can differ by country, so check your own region’s Netflix listing before assuming the title is available where you are.

Is it a season or a prequel?

Blood Origin is a prequel. Netflix lists it as a standalone limited series with its own creators and cast rather than as an episode-numbered season of the main show. Its story takes place long before the events of The Witcher, which is why it is treated as a spin-off in the franchise’s own marketing. Viewers who expect it to continue Geralt’s story will find that its timeline and characters are different.

How it connects to The Witcher

Netflix’s Tudum coverage ties the story to several elements of the franchise: the prototype witcher, the Conjunction of the Spheres, the monoliths, and the Wild Hunt. These are Netflix’s own continuity claims about its screen universe. They describe what the show intends to connect to, not an independent judgment of how well it does so.

The creator’s account

Netflix Tudum interviewed creator Declan de Barra about the prequel’s history, lore, and format. These statements are his own and are attributed to him here:

  • On the format: “Blood Origin will run for four episodes.”
  • On the intended shape of the story: “This felt like a two-part movie.”
  • On the setting: “This is the lead up to that story of colonization, and we explain that in a very nuanced way.”

De Barra says the mystery of the Conjunction of the Spheres led him to sketch out what the world was like before humans and monsters arrived, and that this idea became Blood Origin when he pitched it. The Tudum interview also links the project’s development to work on The Witcher Season 2. Presented here as the creator’s account of how the project began, not as independently verified history.

What the scores measure

Rotten Tomatoes reports two different numbers for the same title, and they measure different groups of people.

Rotten Tomatoes measure Who it reflects Score in the 2026 snapshot Count
Tomatometer Professional critics 29% 38 reviews
Popcornmeter Audience ratings 13% More than 5,000 ratings

These are live aggregates and they change as new reviews and ratings arrive, so treat the figures as a snapshot rather than a fixed record. Audience ratings are also not a survey of the Witcher fanbase. They reflect the people who chose to rate the show on that site at the time it was checked. A score of 13% describes that group’s ratings; it does not measure how every fan feels.

When you cite these numbers, include five details: the service, which score type you mean, the review or rating count, the date checked, and the title as Rotten Tomatoes lists it.

What critics actually say

The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus for the series reads: “A shallow excavation of ancient lore from Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series.” It adds that the show shares ancestral DNA with The Witcher but offers little of what makes the main series memorable. This is the consensus of that site’s critics summary, not a neutral fact and not the view of every critic.

Why the backlash is hard to reduce to one cause

The sources reviewed for this article do not establish a single reason for the negative audience reaction, and they do not measure how representative that reaction is. It would be unsupported to credit the scores to a particular casting choice, a specific creative decision, a change in the franchise, or an organized online campaign.

What can be said with more confidence is what the critics’ consensus objects to: the treatment of the lore, and the weak link to the main series. Those are judgments about the show’s writing and continuity. Whether they explain why audience ratings are low is a separate question, and the available evidence does not answer it. The most reliable way to form a view is to compare Netflix’s stated continuity intentions against the four episodes themselves.

The books and the TV story

Netflix labels the series as based on books, and the Tudum interview refers to readers of the novels and how the prequel relates to that story world. Blood Origin is Netflix’s own prequel, however, and it is not a direct adaptation of any particular Witcher novel. Readers who want the franchise’s source material can start with Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher books, which are the basis for the wider franchise, but they should not expect the series to follow a specific book.

Where to watch

Blood Origin is a Netflix streaming title. The sources reviewed did not establish a physical home-video release, so availability on Netflix is the main way to watch it. Because catalog availability varies by country, confirm the listing in your region.
