Public reporting describes Mariah Carey and her older sister Alison as having a deeply strained, largely estranged relationship. Carey alleged in her 2020 memoir that Alison abused and endangered her when Carey was 12. Alison denied the allegations and later sued over the memoir. Those accounts conflict; the reporting available here does not independently establish the alleged events or the lawsuit’s outcome.
What Mariah Carey said about Alison
Carey’s most detailed public account appears in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. As summarized by The Independent on 29 September 2020, Carey wrote that when she was 12, Alison drugged her with Valium, offered her cocaine, inflicted third-degree burns on her and tried to sell her to a pimp. Carey also wrote that Alison’s boyfriend left her alone with him and that he forced her to kiss him. These are allegations in Carey’s account, not independently established findings.
Carey also described her childhood as dysfunctional and said that things in the house felt unsafe in a 2020 interview reported by The Guardian on 5 October. Her memoir is the primary published source for her account; reading it can provide more context, but it does not by itself verify the allegations.
How Alison responded
Alison denied Carey’s allegations in an interview, according to The Independent. In 2021, she sued over the memoir, describing its claims as “cruel and outrageous” and alleging emotional distress. The Guardian reported on 3 February 2021 that Alison sought at least $1.25 million in damages. That figure was the amount she requested, not an award or a court finding.

A lawsuit records a party’s claims and requests for relief; it does not, on its own, prove either side’s account. The cited reporting does not establish how the case was ultimately resolved.
Were the sisters estranged?
Yes, in the terms used by later public reporting: an Associated Press report published by Arab Times on 27 August 2024 described Alison as largely estranged from Carey. The available reporting supports describing their relationship as strained and largely estranged, but does not establish when the estrangement began, whether they reconciled, or when they last had contact.

In 2024, Carey announced that her mother, Patricia, and Alison had died on the same day, the AP report said. Carey also said she had spent the week before her mother’s death with her. That detail does not establish that Carey saw Alison or that the sisters reconciled. The report does not settle questions about their private contact or the legal case’s disposition.
