The official material does not name one strongest tribe. Scholastic, the publisher of Wings of Fire, describes each tribe with different abilities rather than ranking them, so “strongest” only has a clear meaning once you specify the setting: underwater, in a desert, in extreme cold, in the air, or in a close-range fight with special powers. Below is what the publisher’s tribe descriptions list, how those traits line up with different kinds of contest, and where the evidence runs out.
What the official tribe descriptions list
Each entry below uses the traits Scholastic attaches to the tribe. Where a trait is described as a feature of the whole tribe, it is listed as such; where it belongs to one character or varies between dragons, that is noted.

SeaWings
- Underwater breathing and dark vision
- Strong swimming
- Powerful tails that can create large waves
SandWings
- Survival without water for extended periods
- A poisonous tail barb
- Desert camouflage
- Fire-breathing
IceWings
- Tolerance for subzero temperatures
- Frostbreath
NightWings
- Fire-breathing
- Disappearing into dark shadows
The NightWing card also says the tribe was once known for mind-reading and foretelling the future. That is written in the past tense and is not presented as a current trait, so it should not be counted as a standard ability when comparing tribes.
HiveWings
Scholastic states that HiveWing abilities vary from dragon to dragon. The examples given are stingers, venom, paralyzing toxin, and boiling acid. Because no single set applies to every member, HiveWing traits cannot be assigned to the tribe as a whole the way SeaWing or IceWing traits can.

SkyWings
The official material for SkyWings is thin. The main descriptive line comes from Scholastic’s shop description of the character Tsunami, who is called a fierce warrior. That describes one character, not the tribe, and it does not establish that SkyWings are stronger than any other group.
Matching traits to the kind of contest
The table shows which listed traits apply to which setting. “Not stated” means the publisher’s tribe descriptions do not give a trait for that tribe in that setting, so it should not be assumed.
Rank #2
| Setting | Traits from the official descriptions that apply | Tribes with listed traits for this setting |
|---|---|---|
| Underwater | Underwater breathing, strong swimming, tails that create large waves, dark vision | SeaWings. Other tribes: not stated. |
| Desert | Survival without water for extended periods, desert camouflage, poisonous tail barb | SandWings. Other tribes: not stated. |
| Extreme cold | Tolerance for subzero temperatures, frostbreath | IceWings. Other tribes: not stated. |
| Darkness | Disappearing into dark shadows, dark vision | NightWings (shadows); SeaWings (dark vision). |
| Close-range or toxic attacks | Stingers, venom, paralyzing toxin, boiling acid | HiveWings, but these vary by individual dragon. |
| Aerial combat | Flight-specific traits | Not stated for any tribe in the official descriptions. |
Read the table as a map of where each tribe’s listed advantages apply, not as a score. A tribe with several traits in one setting has more listed advantages there, but the descriptions do not say how those advantages compare in an actual fight.
Building a comparison you can defend
If you want a ranking, make it explicit and label it as your own interpretation rather than series canon. A defensible method looks like this:

- Choose one setting. Pick water, desert, cold, darkness, close combat, or air. A ranking that mixes settings without saying so will contradict itself.
- Count only listed traits. Use the abilities in the publisher’s descriptions for that setting. Do not add traits from memory or from fan wikis.
- Decide whether individual powers count. Traits that belong to one dragon, or that vary by dragon, should be scored separately from tribe-wide traits.
- State the result as a conditional. For example, “In open water, SeaWings have the most listed advantages,” rather than “SeaWings are the strongest.”
Applied this way, SeaWings lead underwater, SandWings lead in desert conditions, and IceWings lead in extreme cold, because each tribe’s listed traits are built around that environment. The HiveWing examples cover the widest range of attacks on the list, but since those attacks differ from dragon to dragon, they cannot be credited to the whole tribe.
How individual powers change the result
A ranking can shift depending on whether rare or individual powers are included. The NightWing mind-reading and future-telling mentioned on the card, and the HiveWing toxins, would change a comparison if counted. The official material does not state how common these powers are within their tribes, so any ranking that includes them should say that it does so and should not claim that those powers are typical.
Rank #4
Where to check and what to watch for
- Use the publisher’s guide first. Scholastic lists Wings of Fire: A Guide to the Dragon World among its series books, and it is the most direct place to check tribe traits in one volume.
- Check the edition. Tribe descriptions can change between printings and editions, so confirm the wording in the edition you are using before quoting it.
- Treat fan rankings as discussion. Titles such as “Which tribe is REALLY the strongest?” reflect how fans phrase the question. They are not canon rankings and should not be cited as the series’ verdict.
Once you name the setting and the traits you are counting, the comparison becomes concrete. Without those two choices, any claim about the strongest tribe is an opinion.
